Well, Bill Clinton is once again being Machiavellian. He now has publicly stated that his wife and John McCain are "very close" and that a race between them would be "the most civilized in history."
I think it’s pretty safe to say that Bill Clinton is playing a game. He knows that McCain is the only Republican who is out-polling his wife in head-to-head match-ups (she’s well ahead of the other Republican contenders). He also knows that if he can portray McCain and his wife as buddies, it will alienate some GOP voters and thus lessen McCain’s chances of capturing the nomination.
Don’t misunderstand me; McCain is quite liberal and very well may be willing to soil his soul with unholy associations. However, I don’t think Clinton’s only motivation here was an innocent desire to express the amicability that may exist between the two candidates, especially since there’s some question as to whether Clinton has ever experienced an innocent desire.
I say this not to buttress McCain, as I’m no fan of his, but he is the one the Democrats fear. Rightly or wrongly, they believe the other Republicans wouldn’t be as formidable in the general election.
I just hope good Democrats start realizing that the one to really fear has the last name of Clinton, and could be a he . . . or a she.
