It’s hard to think of anything more un-American than real estate taxes.  We’ve been conditioned to accept them, of course; we grew up with them.  But did you ever think about what such taxes actually amount to?

Look at it this way: If you rent a dwelling and consistently fail to pay your landlord, you will be evicted.  Similarly, if you "own" your home and fail to pay the government, it will place a lien on your property and perhaps even sell it.

In essence, you are paying rent to the government.

In light of this, do we truly own our property?  After all, should we fail to pay our "rent," we can be "evicted" from the dwelling that ostensibly is our own.

So a man’s home is no longer his castle.  Moreover, it’s hard to see how real estate taxes aren’t a violation of the Fifth Amendment; there is no stipulation saying that property can be taken if the government doesn’t receive rent.

In reality, our current system is reminiscent of feudalism, in that real estate taxes are tantamount to the services a vassal had to perform for his lord.  Thus, there is no question that the Founding Fathers would have found this extraction of wealth an abomination.
