Southern Ledger: Is John McCain Eligible to Be President?

There is a discussion on the Web about whether or not John McCain is constitutionally qualified to be president.  Rodger Hedgecock discusses this, and here is an excerpt:

John McCain was born in 1936 on an American military base in the Panama Canal Zone to American citizen parents. There is no question he is a citizen of the United States; the question is whether John McCain is a “natural born citizen” “eligible to the Office of President”.

Earlier in the campaign season, devotees of California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger touted him for President. It was widely accepted that, absent a Constitutional Amendment, the Governator was barred from running because he was born in Austria but now a naturalized citizen of the U.S. So, not all citizens of the U.S. are eligible to be President.

    ‘The rest’ refers to the possible disparity between Article II and the 14th ammendment. Clearly the 14th ammendment was ratified to guarantee the constitutional rights of former slaves, and introduce the concept of “Due Process”. However, as to the disparity, I think the 9th ammendment may be of some use as far as providing a tie-breaker:
    “The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain Rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.”

    The place of his birth should not be the issue, but in fact, his age should be. I believe that older people should be respected and revered, however, the stressful nature of the Executive Office is too much for a 71-year old, no matter the fact of his military experience. All of the former Presidents whom entered the office with mostly dark-colored hair left the office with grey hair, and he would of course leave with none because he’s already grey. I know that our seniors are capable of driving, caring for themselves, and making decisions for themselves, however, they should not entertain the thought of beginning a new career when they should be enjoying their time with their families.

    Good point. I too have noticed the graying of the follicles that occurs over the course of two terms as president( or even only one!). Clearly McCain is borderline Elderly, but hey! 70 is the new 50, right? LOL..
