Author Jonah Goldberg was on Hannity & Colmes last night talking about another one of Barack Obama’s unseemly associations. He pointed out that the Illinois Lip once consorted with Bill Ayers, a former Weather Underground terrorist who set off bombs as part of his campaign against America.
It is said that a man is known by the company he keeps. Yet it doesn’t surprise me that one de facto communist would associate with another; rather, I want to focus on something different.
I ask you, what do you think Ayers is doing now? Would you suppose he’s dead or in prison? It is a logical assumption. Actually, Ayers is alive, well, and walking amongst us, having dodged the hangman’s noose, figuratively speaking, along with the rest of the Weathermen miscreants. They escaped justice on a technicality: Prosecutorial misconduct. And there’s a kicker, too.
Ayers a college professor.
He is a "Distinguished Professor of Education" at the University of Illinois at Chicago, molding young minds with the hammer of leftist orthodoxy. (I wonder, does he ever regale his classes with stories about the good ol’ bombing days?) And, if that isn’t bad enough, get this: Of the seven former Weathermen featured on this page, three are college professors.
That’s not just a kicker, it’s a kick in the teeth. Fitting, though, I suppose; completely congruent with the character and obvious mission of the modern academy.
This, more than most anything else, speaks volumes about the current state of the U.S. People who used to be part of the radical counter-culture — some of whom are terrorist swine — are now part of the radical establishment. These are the types of individuals who control the levers of power nowadays.
As far as Ayers goes, he has also edited and/or written a dozen books on education theory, practice and policy. Ah, America, the land of opportunity.
Oh, I should also mention that Ayers said in a 2001 interview, "I don’t regret setting bombs; I feel we didn’t do enough" and that he once preached that rich people should be killed. I don’t know how many would be inclined to take his advice, but it should be noted that Ayers himself is now, I’m sure, quite rich.
