In keeping with the practice of arresting parents who spank ill-behaved brats and having taxpayers subsidize borrowers who can't live within their means, a rancher has just been punished for defending his own property. Writes Reuters:
of illegal immigrants who claimed they were held at gunpoint by an
Arizona rancher after slipping over the border from Mexico five years
ago.
The civil jury at the U.S. District Court in Tucson, Arizona, found
Roger Barnett liable for assault and intentionally inflicting emotional
distress in the incident in March 2004. It ordered him to pay four
women $73,352 in damages, attorneys for the plaintiffs said.
It appears that all Barnett did was make a citizens arrest, using the threat of a gun and a large dog to hold the invaders for the authorities. So, I have to ask: What is the problem?
Such ranchers are just doing jobs American authorities won't do.
A story such as this is a quick righteousness test. If someone doesn't feel outrage at the rewarding of these lawbreakers, he is a person with a warped moral compass — otherwise known as a leftist.
Also, the average American has no idea how pathetic these actions make us look to the rest of the world. Do you think this makes us seem "the bigger man"? Do you think it's viewed as taking the high road? Do you think it's fancied nobility? It's not. I wrote about this two years ago in a piece titled "Soft People, Hard People," and here is a relevant passage:
. . . make no mistake, they
laugh. Why do you think the Mexican government distributed literature
instructing its citizens on how to best violate our southern border?
Why did Islamists issue advice on how to play the victim card in the
American legal system? They don't tolerate such under their dominion,
but they know about our lawsuits, protests, pandering politicians and
capitulating clergy. They know the game. They know us. And they
don't really think we're barbaric or unjust.
They think we're weak and stupid.
Yes, they really do, you leftist quislings (yes, that's a redundancy). And, no, you're not better than they are. You're just softer, more effete, and at least as corrupt. You are the walking, talking cyanide capsules of civilization.
