So a noose was found hanging outside a black cultural center of the University of Maryland and a hate crime probe has been launched.  I’ve written much about hate crime laws, and I won’t restate here the arguments I’ve made against them; suffice it to say, though, that they’re an effort at thought control.

Don’t get me wrong, I have no problem with schools punishing such pranksters (and call it a vile prank if you will, but it is a prank), but bringing in the law and turning every politically incorrect act into a federal case is Orwellian.  And that’s just what is done nowadays when the "wrong" kind of people engage in the wrong kind of behavior.  It’s what happened in Maine when two middle school boys threw a bag containing a ham steak on a table at which some Moslem students were eating, and it’s what is happening here.

But something occurs to me.  The courts have ruled that flag burning is protected "speech"; yet, the idea here is that hanging a noose is not?  Why?  Sure, maybe the perpetrators of this act hate blacks, but some who burn the American flag hate America, Americans or both.  And, sure, burning the flag can be a political message, but so can hanging a noose (or is it just that political messages the majority agrees with are protected nowadays?).  After all, maybe the rope-hangers don’t like the multiculturalism or double standard represented by a black cultural center (it’s name is  the"Nyumburu Cultural Center") and this was their clumsy way of protesting such things.

The truth is that hate crime laws don’t really punish hate, but the things leftists hate.  If leftists were honest, they would just call them "things-we-can’t-stand-because-they’re-contrary-to-our-agenda laws."

Anyway, I guess that all that can be said by the "wrong" people who run afoul of these laws is something  Yogi Berra might say: I think I felt the wrong hate.

Better not throw any ham steaks on the tables of a dining room in an Oak Lawn, Illinois school. They will cancel lunch! (See News: “Oak Lawn Schools May Cancel Holiday Traditions)

It’s unbelievable. They should go back to their own country if they don’t like our ways.

They should go back to there own country. “That’s rich”. Whats not right is just not right. If you disagree with legislation or decisions that judges have made concerning different races, you should address that with those particular people. Not display, harass or attempt to intimidate the people that those policies are intended to help. That is childish and definitely not intellectual. This is a nation that was I thought at least built on the fact that we valued the diversity among us and that fact that all men were created equal, not just white men or black, asian or latino men for that matter. Also this nation protects the rights of all of its people not just one socially defined group. Some of us need to step off the plantation and into the 21st century our country is hurting and I’m sorry the local black guy going to work is not who perpertrated the acts of 9/11, those were people whose intent was to kill all, not just whites.

I think that it’s pretty cowardice for those that hung the noose to hide after the fact anyway. If in fact it was a prank used in order to bring about even more attention to the already known existence of racism, then they should let their identity be known and talk about it. And why would college students, or adults for that matter, follow the ridiculous prank of some high school students in a hick town like Jena anyway. For so much intelligence, it seems that you all can be more creative than that.

    Noose! The New N-Word!
It has been a long, long time since anyone has been lynched in “hick towns” like Jena. Modern lynchings take place inside executive suites in NYC. Don Imus, Duane Chapman and Nick the Greek are just some of the strange fruit sprung of political correctness. A black bus driver in Iowa was just fired for using the older more traditional n-word, whose victims include Ron Goldman and Nichole Simpson. For a nation that prides itself on freedom of speech, it seems that we are willing to tolerate a Joseph Stalin approach to those who use the n-word… either of them.
