In a place that truly meets the definition of the term "nation" — that is, one in which the people have a sense of national identity and a shared concern for the perpetuation of their culture — certain things just won’t be debated.
Like, for instance, the idea that the language of the land should be spoken by all.
Sadly, that’s no longer the kind of country in which we live. And an illustration of why is currently playing itself out among our esteemed leaders.
The Salvation Army is being sued by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (the first bureaucracy I’d eliminate if I could) because its thrift stores in Boston require their employees to speak English. Our better politicians sought to remedy this injustice, but the odious Congressional Hispanic Caucus and their lapdog Nancy Pelosi are frustrating their efforts.
John Fund writes about the whole sordid affair:
Should the Salvation Army be able to require its employees to speak
English? You wouldn’t think that’s controversial. But House Speaker
Nancy Pelosi is holding up a $53 billion appropriations bill funding
the FBI, NASA and Justice Department solely to block an attached
amendment, passed by both the Senate and House, that protects the
charity and other employers from federal lawsuits over their
English-only policies. The U.S. used to welcome immigrants while at the same time encouraging
assimilation. Since 1906, for example, new citizens have had to show
"the ability to read, write and speak ordinary English." A century
later, this preference for assimilation is still overwhelmingly
popular. A new Rasmussen poll finds that 87% of voters think it "very
important" that people speak English in the U.S., with four out of five
Hispanics agreeing. And 77% support the right of employers to have
English-only policies, while only 14% are opposed.
Despite this, Pelosi’s perfidious actions are holding sway. Paul Weyrich gives us an update:
"The vote [to protect employers from the lawsuits] infuriated the 21 members of the
Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC). After failing to shut the House
down by a vote of 204-184, CHC members suggested they would attempt to
block the appropriations bill."
Weyrich then tells us:
"[CHC] Chairman Joe Baca (D-CA) said last week
that ‘[Pelosi] has agreed and our Caucus is united. Everybody agrees it
was a mistake.’ According to ROLL CALL, he added that he expects the
language
either to be struck in its entirety from the omnibus spending
bill or to be replaced by language drafted by the Mexican-American
Legal Defense and Education Fund."
Isn’t that nice? The "Mexican-American
Legal Defense and Education Fund" is now formulating policy for the Disunited States of America.
All I can say is that I have two recommendations. First, we should definitely maintain our current immigration policies; I mean, this country will surely be a better place once the CHC has ballooned from 21-strong to 100-strong. Hey, if it grows powerful enough, we won’t have to be burdened with this debate at all. Second, we absolutely must elect more leftists such as Bella Pelosi to office. Let’s have San Fransisco values for everyone.
Now I’ll transition from the sarcastic to the serious. The EEOC is an oppressive, intrusive
bureaucracy that has the effect of trumping freedom of association, a right implied in our Constitution. Moreover, to violate the freedom in this fashion — to attempt to prohibit the people from preserving their culture through their own initiative — is especially damnable.
As far as I’m concerned, Pelosi and her ilk are nothing less than traitors.
