Of all the empty election-year talk, none rings more hollow than that about "experience." We’re told Barack Obama lacks experience, but Hillary Clinton possesses it in abundance. Does anyone ever wonder what such individuals have experience in?
I long ago noted that some people have more experience after one year than others do after ten. That’s the difference between having experience and merely having had experiences.
Obviously, we call a person experienced when, through his life’s endeavors, he has achieved wisdom. But as Tom Wilson once said,
"Wisdom doesn’t always come with age. Sometimes age just shows up all by itself."
That’s why there’s no fool like an old fool.
Speaking of which, by our typical way of reckoning, Ted Kennedy would be immensely experienced. So would his philosophical soulmate Fidel Castro. Perhaps we should elect one of them president.
I couldn’t care less about experience, as we have come to define it in political circles. It’s now just another one of those superficial measures that has no relation to ability to govern. Much like appearance and charm — which have less credibility but even more influence — intelligent people should pay it no mind whatsoever.
Given this emphasis on such shallow measures, there’s no doubt that an "inexperienced" man like Abraham Lincoln couldn’t be elected today. Nor could 12 fishermen become apostles. "Where is your theology degree?" they’d be asked. Oh, but Mr. Left-of-left has a Ph.D.? Well, then, that’s a different story; make him the chair of the department. It doesn’t matter that he’s a raving communist. It doesn’t matter that he’s a lunatic. But I repeat myself. It’s just a good thing God can look more deeply than we can.
A while back Barack Hussein Obama was asked about his supposed lack of experience. But what concerns me is his intellectual vacuity and profound lack of virtue and wisdom, and the lack of the latter quality was betrayed by his answer. Here is what I would have said:
Well, honestly, you’re right. I have no experience levying confiscatory taxes and stealing people’s wealth. I have no experience violating the Constitution, writing intrusive laws and robbing people of freedom. I have no experience propagandizing and lying to get elected. I have no experience pandering to special interest groups, taking lobbyist money and funneling funds to pork barrel projects. So, you’re right, I have absolutely no experience.
Vote for the other guy.
