By now, everyone knows about the controversy surrounding Barack Obama and his vile, bigoted pastor, "Reverend" Jeremiah Wright. Everyone is awaiting Obama’s speech on the subject, but what’s the point? We know what he’s going to say.
Nothing surprises me about this situation, by the way, as such sentiments aren’t all that unusual in the black community. But I will note a few things. First, I fully expect Obama to skate on this; political correctness has ensured that being a member of a politically-favored group means never having to say you’re sorry. Second, while all with their heads out of the sand know that the mainstream media wanted to bury this story, even much of the alternative media (e.g., Bill O’Reilly) has registered a remarkably tepid response. If there were a white politician who had a close relationship with a white pastor who said corresponding things, would the commentary be so measured?
And that is the point.
While bigoted blacks and brainwashed whites may lack a sense of proportion here, there is no getting beyond something like this. I hope you realize that. Sure, aided and abetted by shills in the media and a profoundly immoral electorate, Obama will likely weather this storm (I’m sorry to report). But, as my mother used to say, tell me who your friends are and I’ll tell you who you are. You can fool most of the people all of the time, but the Truth is unbending.
Obama was, by his own admission, "friends" with this vile man for 20 years; he has characterized Rev. Wrong as being like an uncle. Rev. Wrong married him and his wife and baptized their child; Obama has attended Wrong’s church at least continually (note: This is not the same as continuously) for two decades. Now he would have us believe that he didn’t know about Wrong’s vile rhetoric? I don’t know about you, but I wasn’t born yesterday.
Let us, though, entertain the notion that he didn’t know. What does this tell us about Obama’s level of awareness and discernment? If he couldn’t see the demon in the pulpit in front of his nose, how will he ferret out demons oversees? Why should we think that he would stand a chance of discerning the dangers posed to America by secretive governments and terrorist groups? I’m sorry, but Obama can’t have it both ways; either he knew and didn’t care, or he cared but didn’t know. Either way, that’s not presidential material.
Obama will, no doubt, spin this beautifully. I fully expect him to utter some nice words and the media to say, "Well, now, that’s that. We must forgive and move past this." But as I pointed out in my piece "Forgiveness," forgiveness doesn’t obviate consequences. Certain things disqualify you from doing certain things. And while Obama is good at rendering speeches and can talk chicken off the bone, nothing can change that fact.
As far as the presidency goes, his friendship with Rev. Wright makes him Mr. Wrong.
