On Tuesday, truckers across the country staged a loosely organized protest against high fuel prices, clogging up the New Jersey Turnpike in the process.
While people certainly have a right to protest, any sympathy I might have had for the truckers went out the window when I heard about this tactic. I can well imagine the heartache they caused drivers on the New Jersey Turnpike, a roadway that’s sometimes a nightmare under normal conditions.
And let’s consider the logic here: We’re upset about high diesel prices, so we’re going to clog up a highway and inconvenience thousands of people who not only aren’t responsible for them but who also suffer because of them. Makes a lot of sense.
This isn’t the first time protesters have caused traffic jams, and I can’t think of anything that makes me feel less sympathy for a cause. I heard that the police were issuing tickets to the offenders. Well, in my world that would be the least of their problems.
As for the cost of fuel, both the federal and state governments should be pressured into rescinding all gasoline taxes posthaste. And, if we’re not willing to work toward such an end, we have no right to complain about the cost of fuel.
