One of the consequences of being right in an age of lies is that it brands you as a radical.  Remember that being an extremist doesn’t mean you’re wrong, but simply that your views deviate greatly from those of the mainstream.  If you say that 2+2=4 in a land where everyone else insists it’s 5, you’ll be labeled a radical.  The same is true if you assert that a certain society of men is full of wolves when everyone else believes they’re sheep.

Now, for years I’ve been telling people that most of our Democrats are essentially socialists; sure, either they won’t admit it publicly or aren’t fully aware of it themselves (quite common; self knowledge is often sorely lacking, especially among leftists).  It was a message as hard to relate as it is for many to accept, as it renders you something less than the kind of "credible" commentator who gets invitations to appear on Fox News (bigot Opio Sokoni was on O’Reilly last week).  But that message now goes down a little easier with the recent Democrat proposal to nationalize oil refineries.

There is a great article on this very subject by a writer named Lance Fairchok; it is titled "Why Do We Call Them ‘Democrats’?  After quoting a couple of Democrats who waxed enthusiastic about nationalizing the oil refineries, he presents this Freudian Slip by Congressman Maxine Waters:

"This liberal will be
all about socializing, uh, uh . . . would be about . . . basically
taking over and the government running all of your companies."

Well, well, I don’t suppose that’s the kind of rhetoric she used on the campaign trail (although I suspect most of her constituents either wouldn’t know what she was talking about or wouldn’t care).  Don’t rejoice too much at the shedding of the mask, however, as it’s not so much attributable to a sudden spirit of honesty as it is to a changing climate.  The truth is that no small number of American citizens are now socialists, only, they usually aren’t aware of it.  These are people — and we’ve all met them — who never heard a proposal for government involvement they didn’t like.  They only ask that one of two criteria be met: The proposal must sound convenient for them or inconvenient for someone who they envy.  Oh, and, yes, I have always known that greed and jealousy — as opposed to some noble desire to help the downtrodden — are what drive leftists.  Winston Churchill observed this decades ago when he said:

"Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery."

If you doubt both that old curmudgeon and me, a younger one, consider research related by columnist Peter Schweizer in this article.  He  writes,

Scholars at Oxford and Warwick Universities found the same sort of behaviour (a desire to take from those who have more) when they conducted an experiment.

Setting
up a computer game that allowed people to accumulate money, they gave
participants the option to spend some of their own money in order to
take away more from someone else.

The result? Those who
considered themselves ‘egalitarians’ (i.e. Left of centre) were much
more willing to give up some of their own money if it meant taking more
money from someone else.

Much of the desire to distribute
wealth and higher taxation is motivated by envy – the desire to take
more from someone else – and bitterness.

Unfortunately, while we can give ourselves pep talks about how we value liberty and the wonders of our "free market" (if only it were freer), the truth is that socialism has swept the West.  British Chancellor of the Exchequer quipped about this over a century ago when, after introducing death duties in the budget of 1894, he said, "We are all socialists now."

As I said before, though, let’s not lose sight of the fact that the politicians merely reflect the people.  Too many Americans have been instilled with unrealistic expectations for lifestyle and a spirit of entitlement, and they will glom onto any slick demagogue (even if he has a strange foreign name) who promises a larger piece of the pie.  As to this, in Fairchok’s article he presents a chilling prediction made by U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate Norman Thomas more than half a century ago.  To wit:

"The American people
will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism,’ they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program,
until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how
it happened."

While I can’t say much for the man’s politics, he was, at least insofar as this went, quite prescient.  Most Americans have been inured to socialism under a different name, although virtually all would protest loudly if so accused.

People fall victim to the idea that socialism can work for a few reasons.  For one thing, new generations are born and, with history taught so poorly, the mistakes of the past must be learned anew.  Then, many labor under the illusion that socialism breeds prosperity in places such as Sweden, when in reality such countries are dying a lingering death.

Yet, if socialism — in any guise — is what Americans want, it’s what they will get.  But not only won’t they know how it happened, as Thomas said, they won’t like the consequences and won’t know what to blame them on.  Thus, they
probably will fancy that the solution is even more government involvement.

Another thing that gets you branded a radical is when you point out that socialism is just a less virulent strain of communism.  Yet the pseudo-intellectuals who would thus stigmatize you are blithely unaware of an important fact.

Karl Marx himself said that socialism was just a transitional phase on the road to communism.

We just have to wait for the second mask to come off.

Excellent piece. Unfortunately America due to its success has become soft — thus the embracing of socialism as it is the slackers way to paradise. Unlike other socialist countries with small populations and significant resources with which to maintain the charade — America will hit bottom fast. At this point, watch how those in Washington flail about trying to create a solution – but to no avail. I wonder how the world will look like when this happens. Is it possible that our great experiment will implode? Cheers.

Unsurprisingly, Maxine Waters’ spokesperson said she didn’t mean it when she said that she would socialize the oil industry.
Nothing like damage control. What’s sad is that this will work on a good portion of the country.
They’ll excuse it by saying that she just misspoke or got her words jumbled up.
    Unbelievable yet increasingly believable.

Okay, right now Americans want socialism. So, what? Why shouldn’t they have what they want? We are in a democracy, right? They wanted goofy Ronald Regan a number of years back and they got him, with his thousand-yard stare and “let’s-go-watch-cartoons” grin. It can even be argued that they wanted George W. Bush, although that argument somewhat lacks persuasion.
Maybe, that’s why they want socialism today. Even the dumbest barfly catches on after she’s been raped one time too many. She’s going to start drinking at a different bar eventually.
Same thing with the American people. They have had enough. Enough of the trickle down baloney. Enough of the neo-cons. Enough of Bush’s, “Aw-shucks, only four-thousand service-men dead, I’m just havin’ a great time in office, ya all,” treachery and lies.
Enough of being conned by religious pitchmen who manage to divert the attention of Americans from their own interest to some pie in the sky delirium that has them waiving their hands in the air while their pockets are picked.
The conservative mind set allows for and accepts competition; a sort of Darwinian, winners and losers structure that justifies just about anything, as long as it goes their way. Only things don’t seem to be going their way these days. And, they are forever boo-hooing like the torch is going to fall off the Statute of Liberty, about the coming of that horned devil…socialism; something accepted as legitimate and even desired in much of the world.
Hey boo-hoo guys. You neo-cons, old-cons, and just plain con-men really are losing and things are finally going to change. (I know you would like specifics here, but that’s for another day.)
The country has to offer you its thanks. You’ve made things such a mess. It couldn’t have happened without you. (And, I think you know who talked about that too.)

    John,
Thanks for the quick and witty reply. I was hoping to snag a syphilitic pinhead like you. I could offer you some advice as well but naturally, you’d be too dumb to take it. Why don’t you just hum the Star Spangled Banner, have another beer and drive your pick-up truck into the lake where you caught your carp dinner, k?

God I love the hypocrisy of the socialists, er, liberals.
They claim to be the most tolerant of all political species yet they are the first to stereotype and make bigoted, uneducated insults.
I really like how you (Red, White and Little Johnny Got the Blues) turn humming or singing the Star Spangled Banner into an insult.
Some us still hold the National Anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance in high, patriotic esteem, not punch lines in some political debate.

    Mr. Price,
“Hey, socialist scum, go do the world a favor and have an aneurysm, k?”
This is not a “bigoted, uneducated insult?” (I was initially kind of surprised he spelled “aneurysm” correctly. Then I remembered spell-check. I can’t explain the “k,” unless he spends a lot of time hanging around shopping malls in the San Fernando Valley.)
Only liberals are hypocrites, right? And you are not using the “National Anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance as punch lines in some political debate?”
Come on…you guys wrap yourselves in the flag all of the time to cover one agenda or other that you’re pushing. You claim to be holders of the Truth. Try telling it now and then. Patriotism is just a hammer you use to cue a Pavlovian response to your arguments.
I don’t claim to be a liberal (I generally find liberals to be a weak, sniveling bunch…Confusing, eh?) And I certainly don’t claim to be “tolerant.” (Even more confusing right?) And, I don’t claim God as a direct source either. (We know who has a sole source contact on that.)
    So, let’s be honest…
What all of this is about…is the money, isn’t it? The left wants to spread it around and you’re afraid that it’s yours they’ll use; even though you really don’t have much to spread around do you?
So, you fight the good fight for the boys who really have the money. They throw you a moral pat on the head every now and then and you feel good; like maybe a miracle will happen and you will get to climb Mount Olympus and sit with the fat cats in the good seats on the money train.
But really, that’s not going to happen is it? Because the guy with the big cigar wants it all for himself. So, keep working hard on the scam for him so that he can.
This has been fun, and I appreciated the tone of your remarks, but I’m not going to play anymore. I’ve heard it all before and so have you, I suppose. So I’ll leave you with a song…
From Detroit down to Houston and New York to LA,
Well, there’s pride in every American heart,
and it’s time to stand and say:
I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free

Let me begin by saying this: I’m not a Republican; I’m not a neo-con. I’m probably considered a paleo-con, but above that I’m an American.
I can’t speak for other conservatives, and I certainly can’t speak for the current crop of liberal Republicans, but I don’t wrap myself in the Flag for political reasons. Some do. I won’t argue with that.
The “You’re a great American (because you called a radio show)” nonsense that’s spewed on a certain radio show drives me crazy.
I don’t want to get in the “typical” political argument. This country is dying and it’s the result of anti-American policies on both sides.
I want to know what we’re going to do about it.
Are putting forth the idea that socialism is the solution? If so, I disagree, and I would fight you fiercely on that, but I will stand up for right to offer such a solution.
I want debate. I want to identify the problem, analyze it from different perspectives, generate solutions, debate those solutions, and then settle on one and not look back–go full-force.
Finally, I would estimate that 85% of politicians–irrespective of party–are all the same. Follow the money–Saudi money, Chinese money, UAE money, etc.
I hope you come back to this debate, as well as over to my site. All debate is welcome.

My gosh! You have set up so
many straw men in this post
we’ll have to call the fire
department! You’ve created a fire hazard!
When conservatives call democrats “socialists”, such as Obama, they are just using scare tactics. Gullible conservatives
    see this sinister-sounding label
    applied to Obama and Hillary
and it conjures up visions in their heads of America turned
    into another totalitarian
    dictaorship like the USSR, with
    all its brutal reression.
    This is laughable. Like Obama
or not, there is about as much chance of this happening under
him as Osama Bin Laden converting
to Judaism and settling in Israel. I’m not saying that Obama
    will instantly turn America into
a paradise; it’s far too early to
know what w ill happen under him.
    But conservative economic
policies have a lot of problems too.Conservative politicians and
    others are always repeating
    the ridiculous mantra”Just keep
reducing taxes and everything will be hunky dory.” These
politicos are either deluding themselves or just cynically
manipulating gullible conservative citizens into voting
    for them. Reducing taxes DOES
NOT increase prosperity. For some people maybe, but a lot
of poor people get screwed by this. Things are not nearly as bad in the Scandinavian countries as conservatives like you would
have us believe. Sure, they have
their problems, and serious ones, too.I’m not saying they’re paradise. But the high taxes have their benefits. You don’t see
out of work people losing their
    homes and struggling to support
their families as you do in the US. People there in many ways
better off than many people in America, and more secure.
    Recently,there was a public
    referendum in Norway proposing
    significant tax cuts there.
The Norwegian people overwhelmingly voted it down.
Smart people. This isn’t socialism, it’s compassionate
    and efficient government.
    Why can’t WE learn something
    from Scandinavia.

Robert, informed people know exactly what Obama will do. As for taxes, it isn’t first and foremost a matter of prosperity, although excessive taxation does reduce it. It’s a matter of right and wrong. You simply have no right to extract an enormous amount of money from people and use it for your own ends. As Walter Williams says – it’s legalized theft.
Oh, if you want, feel free to go live in Scandinavia. You can send a postcard and let us know how it’s going.

    Alan,
With all due respect a couple of questions; help us all out here:
One…I’m sure you are among the informed people who know exactly what Obama will do if he’s elected. Tell us. Please! I thought one of the complaints from the right about Obama, besides his being a Muslim which is well known now as absolute fact, was that he never gives a firm position on anything. So, what’s he going to do?
Now…Why is it that it is wrong for governments to tax? I’m sure you’re not a moral relativist. So, it’s either right or wrong to tax. How much tax is levied shouldn’t be a problem. It’s stealing or it’s not?
Finally…Do you actually think Mr. Berger can just pack up and move to a
Scandavian country? You ever lived overseas? Think you can just show up with a big smile and a Howdy, and they’ll let you stay? Or, was that just a lingering thought from the long forgotten sixties? You know, the “Love it or Leave It” response to any suggestion that another country just may have it over the United States in some miniscule (I know the bathrooms are generally cleaner in Germany) way?
    Let’s hear from you…
