I remember experiencing one of my first insights into the true
nature of modern liberalism. I was 19 years old, sitting in an Indian
restaurant with an erstwhile high school "buddy" who was talking about
his aspirations. He concluded by waxing idealistic and saying "I want
to do good things."

"How incongruous," I thought. This fellow
was cutthroat, calculating, conniving, and ruled by a lust for success.
(I know, you ask why I was dining with him –- hey, Jesus ate with
sinners, too.) Yet now he sat before me, alluding to a desire to
advance liberal causes and to help others. It was then that I had an
epiphany, one that was a seminal point in what became a long
philosophical journey toward Truth. "This is posturing," I realized.
It’s not so much that liberals want to do good; it’s that they want to
be thought of as doing good.

Your “conservatives good, liberals bad” claims are not only extremely simplistic but
grossly unfair. There are extremists on both sides and it’s hard to tell which are worse.
Whatever his faults may have been, Arthur Miller was not a
racist and rabidly homophobic bigot like Jesse Helms.
Being a liberal does not necessarily mean that you are a
socialist, Marxist or a communist. Since when does wanting the government do more to help the poor out of their plight
    make you any of these?
The republican policies don’t do this. I’m all for a free market economy, but there has to be a safety net for those in difficult circumstances.
Will you please stop misrepresenting, stereotyping and
    demonizing liberals?

I think fatjoe (I really liked his last record) meant to say, “Hey Robert Berger…”
It’s must be hard for him to think, type and eat all at the same time.
    Hey fatjoe…

    Hey…Selwyn Buddy,
You running for Pope? Or running from your past? Something happen to you man? You’re like reading Fulton J. Sheen reincarnated. (All right, I know you don’t believe in reincarnation, but you get what I mean?) I keep expecting to find your stuff posted in Latin. This article has an intriguing twist though. I sure wouldn’t want to buy a used car from you. You are good. Scary good!

We all know there are exceptions to every “rule” and that no generalization is 100% true; however, as a person who usually despises generalizations, I think the comments Selwyn made are strikingly accurate. “Feel good” emotion plays a much bigger role in the liberal mindset than logical reason about facts or consequences.

Many conservatives often say, “To whom much is given, much is expected,” however, they form certain stipulations on just who gets their help. For instance, we can give this war the 100 years John McCain and most of the conservatives want us to give, but try extending certain programs for the poor here at home and see where it gets you with the convervatives. All I’m saying is that if that saying is true, ANYONE who needs our help who are less fortunate needs our help, not just those of a certain group.

Hey “democrat” and “Rbt. Berger”, you 2 are just another example of liberal Marxist obsession with money, just throw OTHER PEOPLE’S money at a problem and it makes you feel good. If there were ever a pathetic failure in this country, it would be the liberal ideas of LBJ’s “Great Society”. How many trillions have been thrown at “poverty” and the problem is static or worse.
Look at New Orleans, when the hurricane hit, did we see a large group of altruists banding together to help? No, we saw able bodied men bugging out, no women and children first with this crowd. The “lifeboats” were full of liberal spawn. You people and your policies are so phony it’s pathetic. You promise everything and give nothing. In otherwords you are liars.
Jessie Helms a racist? If you look at liberal policy over the years, the KKK couldn’t have done more damage to black society. You self-important scum.

Now, Now MHarris, let’s not get testy. Namecalling is such a redundant act, especially for an adult, don’t you think? No one says “let’s throw money at the problem,” but the truth of the matter is, poverty exists due to lack of it, as well as the lack of education of the impoverished. Also, no one is speaking just of the black race either, because blacks are not the only racial group in poverty. Yes, the things that happened during Katrina were totally uncalled for and a complete disgrace, however, it was the conservative administration and the incompetent people in high positions who didn’t get there in time enough to at least appear to have some compassion for those afflicted by this natural catastrophy. If people live like animals, what do you expect them to act like, especially in times of desperation and hardship? And then for the people who were just trying to survive the aftermath, only wound up living in FEMA-provided (government provided) trailors that were toxic to their health. Before the trailors arrived, can you imagine sleeping a dome with thousands of strangers who may or may not have criminal records or may be registerd sex offenders, and, with no food, water, lights, or any privacy to relieve yourself? Try to place yourself in their shoes, or even the shoes of everyday people who are impoverished, and see just how much you would want someone to care or to have mercy on you.

    You Kidding?

I love it when a brainwashed minion of the American right, puffs up his chest and gets drill-sergeant close-up to your face, breath scented with old age and gum disease and calls someone he has only the vaguest insight into…“Scum!”
Or better yet, “Liberal scum!” Or topping that even; the vilest trinity, “Liberal Marxist scum!”
Often these guys are regular working class Joes who rely heavily on a code of machismo best exemplified by old John Wayne movies, but ironically not in fact fully practiced by the late Mr. Wayne himself.
“Ya dirty, Liberal Marxist Scum …Fill your hand mister!”
These quick-draw artists are guys, who would themselves, benefit from unionization, a national health plan, a strengthened social security…Simply a government who fosters their interest. Yet, often they are the first ones to resist the “Scum” who would implement those programs. Their daddies were saved by the New Deal, yet they can muster the gall to scoff at the intentions of the Great Society and cheer Ronald Regan as he deregulated and union-busted though the recessionary years of his office.
It is the single greatest trick of the guys running and re-running the right wing puppet show. They have managed to convince the average guy to think, and even worse, vote against his own self interest. So, anyone who suggests something that would benefit him, or maybe his slightly less fortunate brother, is…Yes, you got it …”Liberal Scum!”
It reminds me of the way the same strain of folks would holler “dirty common-ist” in the fifties and sixties at anything that would benefit the average guy. Now, it’s “Liberal Scum.” And proof that the long-con in politics really works. It’s kind of like the saying that, “the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing us that he didn’t exist.”
He exists all right. He’s wearing a halo, waiving a flag, carrying a Bible and prodding a working Joe, with a pitchfork full of the most clever deceit going, to regard someone who would help him as his own sworn enemy.
