It seems as if taking offense is the recreation of
choice in modern America. The latest
example (of which I’m aware; I’m sure our UPS {umbrage per second} statistic is
sky high) has resulted in a planned protest at WOR Radio in Manhattan over some
comments radio talk show host Michael Savage made concerning autism. Or, to be precise, the commentary involved
not that condition but behavior that might be misdiagnosed as autism. Here is what Savage said, as reported
by wcbstv.com:

During the July 16 edition of his show,
Savage claimed that autism is “[a] fraud, a racket. … I’ll tell you what autism
is. In 99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act
out. That’s what autism is. What do you mean they scream and they’re silent?
They don’t have a father around to tell them, ‘Don’t act like a moron. You’ll
get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man.
Don’t sit there crying and screaming, idiot.’”

One person who took exception to
this commentary was Martin Schwartzman, the father of an autistic child. He opined:

“I couldn’t understand why someone
could be so heartless and so insensitive, and also so ignorant for a
national talk show host . . . . It was
so hurtful to all individuals with disabilities, particularly those with
autism, but I really think he should be removed from the air.”

For all I know, Mr. Schwartzman may
be a very decent man, but evident is that he has never listened to Savage’s
show. If he had, there are a few things
he would probably understand.

First, Michael Savage grew up with
a brother who suffered from severe retardation, one whom he loved very much and
has spoken of on numerous occasions with the deepest affection and
emotion. Listening to Savage, it’s
apparent that this experience instilled in him a respect for human life that
doesn’t end where mental impairment begins. It is why he was livid when Howard Stern mocked people so afflicted some
years back; it is why he has taken up the cudgels against euthanasia on their
behalf.

It is also why – and I’m inferring
here – Savage is no doubt more offended than most when an irresponsible
psychiatric community diagnoses normal but ill-behaved children as mentally
impaired. It bothers me as well for a
number of reasons, and I’ll explain.

Some today have a nasty habit of
labeling ambiguous sexual encounters (e.g., a woman who, after a consensual
sexual experience, gets jilted and then claims she was an unwilling participant)
as rape. Many people genuinely concerned
about real rape are outraged by this, as such a practice diminishes the
crime. After all, if you bastardize the term,
lumping in the category that which is less serious or even innocent, people
will take it less seriously. This hurts
actual rape victims, as they then may not receive the consideration, care and
redress they deserve.

It’s no different when those who are
merely ill-behaved are misdiagnosed as mentally impaired. By labeling these less serious or even
non-existent problems as mental conditions, it causes society to take authentic
ones less seriously. And when Savage
bemoans this fact, he speaks for millions who have had to care for legitimately
mentally-ill/impaired individuals. I
myself know such a caregiver, and she has lamented the fast-and-loose
psychiatric diagnoses so common today. She has seen firsthand how they take attention, consideration and
resources away from people such as her truly mentally-ill family member.

So, getting back to Mr.
Schwartzman, maybe I can assuage his feelings. Michael Savage is not saying autism doesn’t exist; he is simply pointing
out that the condition is over-diagnosed. Thus, Mr. Schwartzman, if your son is legitimately autistic, Savage
isn’t talking about you. He is not
diminishing your son’s travails but railing against those who are.

This is the spirit and meaning of
what Savage said. Sure, it’s very easy
to cherry-pick extemporaneous radio commentary for the purposes of twisting a
host’s meaning. Talk radio is a
real-time, fast-paced medium where one speaks off the cuff and often uses
hyperbole to drive home concepts. Does
Savage believe that the autism-misdiagnosis rate is actually 99 percent? I don’t know – maybe he does, maybe he
doesn’t. If he does, maybe he’s right,
maybe he isn’t. If literalism matters to
you, I suggest you ask him. But do you
really believe the condition is never
misdiagnosed? Do you really know what
the misdiagnose rate is? Well, we’re not
going to find out by silencing those who dare say the therapist has no clothes.

Regardless, trigger-happy
diagnosticians are legion in psychiatry. The most egregious example of their handiwork is ADHD, a mythical
condition that has become a handy excuse for bad behavior. I addressed it in this piece, in which I point out
that head shrinkers are now prescribing Ritalin for children as young as two years old. I also quote a rare, common-sense
psychologist named John Rosemond, who said (I’m paraphrasing):

“All children ‘have ADD’ up till
age two, but if they’re socialized properly, it’s bred out of them.”

I won’t elaborate further here, but
if you’re interested in my full analysis, read the piece I cited.

Something else in my article is
also relevant. Many may scoff at
Savage’s assertion that a child diagnosed with autism might just be “. . . a
brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out.” C’mon, could it really be an act? Well, consider an anecdote I presented:

. . . I think of a very charming friend I
had many years ago. The son of a
psychologist, he was diagnosed with a learning disability in the 1970s, before
such designations were fashionable, and attended a special school for children
so afflicted. Here is what he told me
about himself and his fellow students (it’s close to verbatim): ‘We thought it
[the ‘conditions’] was all nonsense; it was just a way to get out of doing
work.’

So such children do exist, and
they’re aided and abetted by “mental-health professionals” who are content to
be fooled – and to be foolish. Psychology
is the only field wherein the practitioners invent, or exaggerate the
prevalence of, diseases and conditions so they’ll have ready diagnoses. It isn’t just autism and ADHD. Consider what I wrote
in “The Hard Truth about a Soft Science: Why Psychology Does More Harm than
Good”:

. . . I recently read about psychiatrists
who are labeling the desire to engage in excessive text messaging a mental
disorder. Then there is “Muscle Dysmorphia,” or the obsessive belief that one
isn’t muscular enough; “celebriphilia,” the strong desire for amorous relations
with a celebrity; “Intermittent Explosive Disorder,” or road rage; “Sibling
Rivalry Disorder”; “Mathematics Disorder”; “Caffeine Related Disorder”; and
“Expressive Writing disorder” . . . a defiant child or employee isn’t ruled by
pride but has “Oppositional Disorder,” a person with a lack of gratitude isn’t
just that but one who suffers from “Chronic Complaint Disorder” . . . .

Now, in light of the above, don’t
you think that maybe, just perhaps, misdiagnosis and over-diagnosis might be a
problem? Isn’t suspicion of psychiatric
determinations warranted?

Then there is the reason why the
psychiatric profession suffers from what I’ll call “Chronic Disorder Invention
Disorder”: Money. Every time it labels
what was formerly called a sin as a disease or condition of the brain, its
market grows. “Hey, I just thought of a
new category.”

Ka-ching.

ADHD?

Ka-ching.

Over-diagnosing autism?

Ka-ching, ka-ching, ka-ching.

“Can you diagnosis me,
doctor?” “Why, yes, patient, you’re
$30,000 sick.”

So, you folks who care for the
truly mentally impaired should be upset, but not at Michael Savage. He has been there; he has carried that
cross. Direct you ire at those afflicted
with a “disorder” lamented since time immemorial.

It’s
called greed.

I have never listened to Savage’s show and it will be very unfair to judge based on comments, since I did not heard it firsthand. However, a lot of people might be in accordance to his statement. Bottomline, they have not experienced living with a child who has ADHD or Autism. If they did their views will be completely different. My 7 years old has horrible ADHD and it took me many years and many trials to admit it. I used to blame myself because I was constantly judged and blamed by others who have the same view as Mr. Savage. It was not until I accepted that my child was different that we finally got to live a normal “life.” And for his information a child with ADHD will not understand why he can not control himself, why is he acting like a “moron” even when you try to make him understand that. In any case comments like that (and I know from experience) only make the behaviour worse and damage the child. Let people be ignorant if they want to be. Remember that most of the people don’t know what is true until it happens to them.

This PHD that everyone keeps pointing out, is a very sad example of how poor, these types of so called Dr.’s are. I am the parent of 4 autistic kids, and I can promise you if I could yell at them and get them to act ” Normal” I would be doing sooooo well, I am also a parent support advocate and my husband is a very hands on dad, 100% and though we love them very much, this is not from lack of behavioral interventions, and if Savage was defending kids, he sure in the hell did not sound like it, he needs to listen to how it sounded and then apologize, be a man. Freedom of speech is one thing, this was degrading to autistic people, and it is not o.k. to keep acting like your a dr. just because you have a degree, I promise you, I have a hell of alot of experience and you can not just yell the autism away. You disgust me as a person, and the brown noser whom is defending your position, maybe you need to decide if you want to stop kissing ass and be your own person, because if Savage has a disabled brother, he should hear how his words came out… Does he blame his brothers disability on dr.’s and his parents for not telling him to snap out of his disability and act right??? savage I hope you get fired and I hope you too learn your an IDIOT, and you need to throw out your degree because clearly you do not respect or understand the disabled world. your pathetic. From a mom with 4 and who lives in REALITY< not behind a microphone, bitching and who has been dealing directly with Autism for 18 years, I get it.. Savage has no clue no matter how many books he has written, or no matter how many degrees, you crossed the line, and you DID NOT sound like you were pissed at dr.’s you came across insulting autisic people, the only Idiot or Moron around is Savage!!!!!!

I did not hear Mr. Savages show but being that my son has Autism someone who did brought it to my attention. I read an article about what he said and the biggest mistake he made was by making the comment about the fathers not being around. Basically what that comment says is that mothers let their children do whatever they want then the child gets labeled Autistic. I have a son who will be 5 in September. I thought that he was just delayed in his speech and language. It wasn’t until he was 3 that it was brought to my attention that he may have Autism. I took him to two different specialists that confirmed that he has Autism. I was devastated. Autism has different moderations. Maybe Mr. Savage didn’t mean any harm but he has to understand that we as parents with children with Autism are going to take offense. These are our babies and when someone makes comments like that, we are going to be angry. My son is my miracle. I had 2 miscarriages before I had him. I was going to try one last time and if I would have had another miscarriage I wasn’t going to try to get pregnant again. Well I was blessed that I was able to carry my son and didn’t go through another miscarriage. It broke my heart when I found out he had Autism. With or without Autism I consider my son my “miracle child”. Those of you that are defending Mr. Savage you have to understand that we as parents cherish our children and it is devastating that our child has Autism. To hear someone make comments about it is frustrating. My son is not a brat. Yes, he has tantrums but that IS a part of his Autism.

What nobody is discussing is that governments ARE creating an Autism diagnosis racket. Case in point, CA, with a $14 BILLION deficit is cutting back on EVERY mental health program, except for Autism. It is growing those expenditures considerably this year. So you tell me, how is it not possible that self interests will look at this and not say “are you sure its NOT Austism?” Savage may be guilty of insensitivity, but he is dead on that there are BS Austim diagnoses.

I have to laugh reading all of these hate posts against MS. “A Real Doc” wants proof. Yet, you all have bought the global warming message promoted by Al Gore, making 100 millions on his investment, without one question to the actual science. Where has Media Matters with respect to this illusion?
Then you all support a man who went to church for 20 years listening to a pastor preaching hate, where is your outrage in removing Barak Hussein Obama from the ticket for his poor judgment in churches?
Yet you all attack a man for having an opinion. Clearly his lack of judgment existed in setting his percentage at 99% but it fails, his lack in judgment, to come close compared to the above examples.

This is great! The liberals are screaming for PC and freedom of speach at the same time. I live in So Cal and 40% of the children that attend my sons school are drugged up along with parents. There is nothing wrong with their children except the fact that their parents want them to be mindless zombies. Savage simple points out the facts that the pharma and medical community are drugging your children and the liberal media is on the attack. Over 70% of the doctors are diagnosing your children with bullshit disorder and rotting the inside of your childs brain by drugging them and pocketing cash. Let a kid be a kid! So he called some of them brats, get over it, and move on and don’t forget to pay your drug pushing doctor.

He is pointing out the corruption in modern psychology and modern medicine. The people guilty of this corruption are now acting as if they are the victims. They aren’t, they are the victimizers pushing phony diagnosises and drugs. Drugs which nobody needs and that result in injury to those who recieve them. This is CRIMINAL. Those who post on here pretending they are too thick to understand this are merely hacks for this corrupt group of doctors who ruin lives to line their own pockets.

As parents you need to make sure you are on the proper path to a healthy life with your children. Challenging yourDoctor on the necessity of medication is important because you are a parent that cares for your children and one day I hope your children do the same for you when you get old and diagnosed incorrectly.
This is our future they are only small for a short period of time take care of them don’t shield them from falsehood and truth, help them understand the difference.

It is unfortunate that there are some people taking Savage’s message of concern for children and misconstruing it. He is referring to the medical and pharmaceutical companies that exploit their fields and children. He is not talking about those children who are Autistic and need medical attention. There is a huge problem with corruption, greed, insensitivity, exploitation, and graft in the medical and pharmaceutical arena. It would be foolish to think that there isn’t any type of financial gain or form of corruption going on here especially when so many people are diagnosed with some form of disability, even at the age of two, and then given drugs for it. If you watch television, you are bound to see commercials focused on selling the consumer some form of drug for something you didn’t know you had, but now you do. Drugs are a big money maker. Just ask the dealers on the street. Now others can get in on the drug cartel and its legal.

Savage did not say “Some medical conditions are overdiagnosed.” He said “99% of autism cases are the fault of the father!” I don’t give a dmn what he *meant to say. He got fired from MSNBC for telling a caller to “get AIDS and die,” and he should get booted off of every radio station for this one. And no, it is not a crime to have an opinion. But opinions must be backed up by something, and all Savage’s was backed by is his ideological garbage. Autism is the Democrats’ fault because they ruin family values and give money to poor people–that’s what Savage was really trying to say. I wonder if Savage is aware of biological and biochemical abnormalities present in people with autism: mitochondrial disorder, low glutathione levels, neuroinflammation, etc. Autism is a real disease, and those of us who deal with it on a daily basis are sick and tired of a$$holes like Savage who claim that it’s just a question of diagnosis. Savage should read the DSM-IV before making ridiculous claims like, “There’s no definitive diagnosis for autism.” Yes, there is, Mr. Savage. You’re just too ignorant to know about it and too lazy to research it. Keep spouting your hate, jerk. The country has finally seen you for what you are, and we don’t like it.

Don’t you just love how the ultra-conservanuts try to label everyone by comparing them to nazi’s? Last I checked H.C., being a nazi is a very bad thing, and should not be minimalized with prefixes, such as “feminazi” and the like. Nazi’s carried out very bad deeds, which included murder and the oppression of a race of people which enabled them to deserve a degrading characterization. They didn’t just dissent with another’s point of view, which this is a free forum to do so. I take no offense to anything that has been written here or to what Dr Savage said. People are allowed to have opinions in our country. It’s called free speech and is guaranteed by the Constitution and that includes the public airwaves. As far as I know the only thing that can actually get you in trouble with the government is profanity, and the FCC lost a $500,000 argument about that in the just the last few days, inciting others to violence or broadcasting false alarms. Here’s my question: when did Americans become so sensitive, self empowered and under the belief that we should punish people for having an opinion, including taking away a career that took a lifetime to develop? This is America where most of us believe that you should be punished for your actions and not your words. Now as to the outcry of the offended in this string, do you really think the only people who were offended are Liberals? Conservatives don’t go to quacks, get misdiagnosed, have kids who misbehave or have a child with actual Autism? Have you ever been in a mall in a wealthy and conservative region in your lifetime? I agree completely with Savage on his points and I’m sure of it because I actually listened to his show, was able to take in all of what he said and I speak from experience. As a child I was labeled as an “underachiever” thankfully before prescribing drugs to kids was the first and easy solution. Later in life I was given an adult IQ test and scored a 151. I wasn’t an underachiever, I was bored. The confidence of the test and not the opinion of an overworked guidance counselor gave me the ability to see my potential. Later in life I was misdiagnosed by a Physiatrist in a pill factory where the doctors saw a patient every 15 minutes. The medication made me aggressive and rude and I lost a very good job over it. Two days off the stuff and I was fine. The doctor suffered nothing and still got paid for treating me. I’m a Liberal in most of my beliefs but I listen to Savage often because he’s brilliant, entertaining, funny, informed and unique. He is not a shill for any political party. He says things that Rush, Hanity or the rest don’t have the guts to say. He reminds me of the late William F. Buckley. Stalwart in their beliefs, fearless in their opinions, honest to a fault, not afraid to anger those supposedly allied with them and very likeable. Go ahead and try to silence Dr Savage but I suggest you don’t utter another word for the rest of your life, because they may be coming to silence you next.

My son is autistic. He is 5 years old and just began to speak, and be potty trained (praise the Lord) That being said, in our case, as parents we did not know how to discipline him early on. What does he understand? What does he want? Well let me tell you we have delt with the fall out. We have him under control now. We are sure he is fed, and clean, and well rested before we go out so as to avoid unnessisary problems. That way when he does act out we know he is uncomfortable in some way. But let me tell you, he CAN be a brat. Lets not give these children so little credit that they do not know what they are doing. LOL Sometimes, like any other children, they are just plain bratty. Yes he was given all kinds of med prescriptions, none of wich I filled. That was my choice. He understands no. And wait. And not now. Not because he is any smarter than any other autistic child, but because they are smart. They may not communicate it, but its all in there:)
As far as medication goes I agree totally that our children are way over medicated. NOT ALL. But alot.
My point is, there are always 2 sides to the story. I did not hear this broadcast, but I have listened to Michael Savage for 6 years now. I DO NOT always agree with him. But I have a mind of my own and form my own opinions. If we are being honest, we probibly know someone who over medicates in one way or another, because they can. Here is where people may start throwing tomatoes.
I beleive children are being over diagnosed. I am speaking of autism only, because that is what we personally deal with. Before my son was diagnosed we were told by a few different proffessionals, you want him to be diagnosed “Autistic” not just on the spectrum, you get more services that way.
Well our son is autistic. Not for services, but because he is. He is learning so fast and is so bright and nothing stops him! He is precious. But how many other parents have been told the same? Their child may need some social intervention, or have learning disabilities. Maybe they just need a little extra work in one area or another. But there are a lot of labels out there.
So if I dont take what Michael Savage said personal, because I know what I know about my own son, I can agree, that there is a lot of mis diagnoses going on, and over medicating.
I think everyone needs to take a step back, a deep breath, and change the radio station if you get upset.

Who cares what Michael Weiner (Savage) has to say about autism? It’s been a while since he’s worked as a scientist. But, he should be able to say anything he wants! If you like it – Keep listening. If you don’t – Turn him off. Trying to get his sponsors to cancel his show is treading on his First Amendment rights. (He was in fact canceled in one market because of this autism baloney.) What ever happened to the concept of; “I may disagree with what you say, but I will fight to the death for your right to say it.” I’m no conservative, but we’ve become a nation of crybabies.

“Trying to get his sponsors to cancel his show is treading on his First Amendment rights.”
    What???
E-mailing radio stations and Geico and LegalZoom.com and telling them that I will not spend money on their products unless they stop giving Michael Weiner a paycheck and a platform is an exercise of MY First Amendment rights. Posting on a right-wing blog and calling out the Weiner Nation for being a bunch of ill-informed bullies is an exercise of MY First Amendment rights. He has the right to say whatever he wants, but he does NOT have the right to a three-hour-a-day radio show.
BTW, where did tbag go? Funny that he disappeared as soon as I asked him for facts. Oh well.

Michael nails it everytime! Straight forward, no nonsense, politically incorrect talk…the way America should be without all you pyscho-babling libs. Libs only hear what they want to and tend to take things out of context as they did in this case yet again and heaven forbid if you disagree with them because then that would make you a bigoted, racist, hate speech spewer. Savage is right. Maybe not about autism itself but about misdiagnoses of children and adults. I spent two years of misery trying to get an antibiotic resistant lung infection treated properly. It wasn’t until I began to refuse to do what doctors ordered that I began to get better. My lung infection was “cured” more by accident than by design. I was left with lungs damaged by an infection that should have been cured in a few weeks at most. Doctors are not infallible, they are human and they make mistakes that can do more than be inconvenient for their patients.

Judging by the inane, dissenting comments regarding Michael Savage’s view on autism, I believe that a major medical breakthrough has been made: Liberalism is not just a mental disorder, but another form of autism…apparently you are unable to see the truth in the matter because you are so vehemently afflicted with the malady yourselves. So, don’t waste any time, sign up right away…the government can’t wait to get you into a program; especially if you don’t really qualify. Just remember: There’s plenty of Kool-Aid for everyone…don’t be bashful.

No Clint, what you are doing (trying to get his show canceled) is not free speech. It’s blackmail!
I did like the “Weiner Nation” bit.
