If there ever was an example of inmates running an asylum, it’s the
modern government-school system. Thanks to numerous court rulings,
students can now buck authority with the freedom to wear clothing and
espouse political and social messages that their school – perhaps reflecting the wider community’s standards – deems objectionable.

An example of this has just played
out in Ponce de Leon, Florida, as a lesbian student named Heather Gillman and
the ACLU (American Communist Lawyers Union) have just won a $325,000 judgment
against the Holmes County School Board in a free-speech lawsuit. At issue were the actions of former Ponce de
Leon High School principal David Davis, who led a “relentless crusade” against
homosexuality, according to U.S. District Judge Richard Smoak. Writes NewsHerald.com:

Sounds like Ms. Gillman is the star pupil in the AP “Special Interest Group Grievances and Lawsuits” class.
Who needs skoo’ when you can cash in like this?

I’m not sure who to believe
about this story, but if it’s
true, the principal’s behavior was reprehensible. It’s one thing to verbally express disapproval of homosexuality, even though I think this is just plain stupid,
but making life difficult for gay students is inexcusable.
Why can’t people just live and let live? Who cares if some students are gay ? That’s their
business, and only GOD has the right to judge them.

She was awarded one dollar. Is that big money to you? If so, you have my sympathy.

Spidergrackle, I think Larry G was trying to be funny, but obviously it’s not working.

democrat, you need to install a new sarcasm card. Apparently, yours is no longer compatible with internet discourse, so you’re not receiving sarcasm signals. I suggest a Lewis-Black 2400XG Model.

Hey Selwyn: missed you over at the Bircher site. Just wondering how you feel about David Davis singling the female students out and lifting up their shirts to “see if they had any illegal slogans written on their flesh” wink, wink.
Just a peachy, upstanding guy, I’m sure.
Oh, and the Confederate flag issue: having “GP” on the cover of your notebook is, according to you, akin to “peppering a teacher with profanities” and is therefore something a school can forbid. How about the confederate flag, a symbol of a group who tried to destroy this nation. Davis says wearing this on your clothes is acceptable. Thoughts?

I must have missed the math class where $325,000 equals $1.
If that’s what you interpreted from Selwyn’s post, you have MY sympathies.

Larry, this is why ultra-right wingers lose arguments like this: you don’t f-ing read. She was awarded $1. The $325K was for legal fees. She gets none of that. Had you bothered to learn the first damned thing about this case, you would know that.
But of f course, that would require getting off your fat behind and learning something rather than depending upon this blog to package your information for you. And we can’t have that, can we?

I am on this board writing a comment on this post. Where is this one dollar information? Post a link to it – but only one time is necessary.
I could care less how much this person actually received, but the fact is that $325,000 taxpayer dollars were squandered over some budding extortionist’s “feelings.”

Wow, 1/3 of a million in legal fees? No wonder the ACLU are so keen to sue everybody and anybody. Not to mention how many municipalities just give in and settle ridiculous cases just to keep out of the news and courts. The ACLU are bleeding this country of everything that is great about it.
