By Selwyn Duke

There is a price to be paid for embracing lies.  This truth is never more evident than in an almost-forgotten story from American history: The depression-era emigration of Americans to the Soviet Union.

The New York Sun has just run a review of a book about this event; the reviewer is Richard Pipes and the book is The Forsaken, by Tim Tzouliadis.  It is an interesting story about Americans who were taken in by Soviet propaganda and, amazingly, went behind the Iron Curtain in search of a better life.

But they were in for a rude awakening.  After relinquishing their American passports and becoming disenchanted with existence — I won’t call it "life" — in the Soviet Union, they found that they had long passed the point of no return.  Stalin wouldn’t let them go, and when they complained, they ended up in gulags, where most of them perished.

Not only is there a price for embracing lies, there’s also one for spreading them.  As to this, there are villains in this story, such as George Bernard Shaw, who was enamored of socialism and helped spread Soviet propaganda.  This helps explain why he is regarded as a literary giant, as the left just loves their own.  Yet, one has to wonder how much blood he had on his pen.  The book also exposes other useful idiots.  Writes Pipes:

Much of the book deals with American-Soviet relations during the 1930s
and 1940s. We are given examples of the incredible naïveté of Franklin
Roosevelt, who lacked even elementary knowledge of the Communist
regime: He is quoted as asking, "How could Stalin afford to buy all
these factories?" There are vignettes of the no less naïve vice
president, Henry Wallace, who visited the concentration camp at Magadan
and found nothing amiss, as well as of the despicable American
ambassador to Moscow, the multimillionaire Joseph Davies, who liked
everything in the Soviet Union and even took Stalin’s show trials at
face value. These public figures eclipse the poor devils who had
themselves migrated to the Soviet Union — and who flit in and out of
the pages of this book, faceless and nameless.

Wow, Roosevelt asked, "How could Stalin afford to buy all
these factories?"   That’s precious.  And they say George Bush is stupid?

Of course, Roosevelt was essentially a socialist himself, which is why he proposed a 100 percent tax on all income over $25,000.  That’s right, 100 percent.  However, due to Republican opposition, he had to settle for 90.  This explains why he is regarded as a great president.  Yes, the left really does love their own.

What this review discusses may have happened in the past, but you are being utterly disingenuous.
    Roosevelt’s programs helped this country enormously;
conservatives are in denial about this.
I don’t know if Obama’s policies will work if he’s
elected in November, but to insinuate that he’s going to turn this country into another USSR, with all its
repression, poverty and slaughter, is beyond ludicrous.
There is about as much chance of this happening under Obama as Osama Bin Laden converting to Judaism and
    settling in Israel.
And if any one is a threat to freedom and prosperity in this country, it’s conservtive politicians who want
to pry into our bedrooms, force women to bear children against their will, make contraception illegal, which will only INCREASE abortions and create a blackmarket in contraceptives, deny rights to homosexuals, censor
what we read and view in private, force students to pray in school even if they happen to atheists,
teach religious superstition as scientific fact in schools, thwart vital medical research, and deny help
to the poor and unemployed and tell them”tough nuggies”, and fail to improve our schools, and make it harder for college students to get financial help.
As far as I’m concerned, this kind of America isn’t much better than the USSR. And you think Obama is bad !

“…And if any one is a threat to freedom and prosperity in this country, it’s liberal politicians who want
to pry into our wallets, abort every child conceived, force contraception on children, which will only INCREASE rampant sexual activity and create an STD epidemic, deny rights to straight white males, censor
what we read and view in public with the Fairness Doctrine, prevent students from praying in school even if they happen to Christian or Jewish,
teach paganistic eco-centered superstition as scientific fact in schools, perform medical experimentation on murdered babies, and steal the hard-earned wealth of productive citizens and tell them”tough nuggies”, and destroy our schools with lax new-age curriculum, and grant college students financial help based on race rather than merit.
As far as I’m concerned, this kind of America isn’t much better than the USSR. And you think Bush is bad !”
    Fixed.

This site is like a broken record. Over and over again, no matter what the concern, the Liberals are always to blame for the sorry state of our Nation. Like repeating it will make it true. Last time I checked, I believe we had a Republican President.
The same Republican President on whose watch the nation was attacked on 9-11, who flooded the country with an illegal alien work force, illegally spied on his own people, lied the nation into an undeclared war, suspended Habeas Corpus, sustained countless military casualties, practiced torture, sunk the economy, indebted the future and alienated the world. But, he’s a good Christian, Right to Life, Conservative. And I believe he prays.
Well, I’m a Liberal and I pray too. I pray the Bush/Chaney/Neo-Con legacy will not be continued with the election of John McCain.

Come on, Bush is a liberal, always has been, always will be. The problem with people like you is that you believe Republican=right-wing. It doesn’t. Also, stop lying and acting like you care about illegal immigration. If the dems gain enough control, not only will we have illegal immigration but they will also get amnesty. Only the reps in the house blocked it last time around. And illegals have been coming here for decades, it didn’t start with the liberal Mr. Bush.

    John,
The only thing I care about illegal immigration is that it stops and that those here illegally be sent home. You are correct in that they have been crossing the border for decades. Only with El Senor Bush, the flood gates have been opened. Also , I stand corrected: By your standard I agree that President Bush is not a true Conserative. We may agree that he is in fact a criminal.

Come on, unfortunately, the illegals won’t be deported like they should be. What will happen is that the liberals will increase their control of the houses and no matter which liberal is elected, Obama or McCain, these foreigners will get amnesty. This is because of people like you, who don’t really know who they’re voting for, although you think you do.
Oh and Bush, yeah, whatever. He’s not a criminal, just a weak, somewhat liberal leader who is as weak ideologically as any other big government type. The only hope for denying the illegals amnesty is to elect right wingers to the houses. But the sheeple won’t do it so we’re toast.

It’s funny how many of the left-leaning posters here assume that all of Duke’s readers are “Bush-bots.” I have news for you – many REAL CONSERVATIVES are disgusted with his policies, especially with amnesty initiatives! I can attest to that as I was particularly disillusioned by that arrogant press conference last year when he assumed it was “in the bag” for illegal amnesty, and stated “I’ll see you at the bill signing.” True right conservatives do not always follow the GOP line of the week, as they have not represented according to their interests for some time.
But I think that the hardcore followers of the Democrats can relate to that – the whole PUMA movement exposes their disaffection with the decisions of the powers that be, especially the media. We may never combine our forces, but perhaps we can both define one another by our interests, and not who the media channels present as our spokesmen.

Come On, if I vote I’ll vote for McCain. But not because I like him. Only because he’s the lesser of two evils. I’d like one of the third part candidates but they don’t have a chance. But regardless of whether it’s McCain or Obama, they’ll be pushing amnesty. Our only hope is that right wingers in congress will block the insanity. But don’t bet the farm on it.

The only “lesser of two evils” is Obama, and even though he’s not the candidate I had in mind, he’s better than that dementia-riddled McCain. And besides, I am totally against this war and have been since the beginning. Going to fight this war in Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 because most of the people who carried that out weren’t even from there, nor did they train there. If McCain gets in office, the only thing that he will be focused on is continuing this “invasion” (because technically, it’s not a war) instead of focusing on returning our standing in the world. Like it or not, we can’t live on this planet alone and we need allies for situations like this with Russia. And one other thing, at least Obama knows something about the economy, unlike McCain who admitted that he knew nothing about it. He’s been in the Senate for at least 25 years and he knows nothing about the economy? What has he been doing there all that time besides twiddling his thumbs and developing dementia? He’d be worse than Bush!

You should do some actual research. One, there was no “Iron Curtain” in the 1920s. Two, while there were hundreds of leftists who went to the Soviet Union, many of the Americans who went to were employees of the Ford Motor Company and went to build cars at the behest of their employer. Their passports were taken foe “safekeeping” and they did not have any reason to think this was amiss, since their employer sanctioned it.

There was a family in the 1970s (I believe) who did the same thing. I remember seeing a news story about it, the father particularly being very smug about going over there. Two kids, I believe. I always wondered what happened to that family but I can find no information about them anywhere. But I remember the story so clearly, and thinking, what idiots. Anyone else know about this?
