Russian jets bombed a Georgian airbase just outside the Georgian capital Tbilisi on Friday, and today Russia sent perhaps as many as 150 tanks into the breakaway Georgian province of South Ossetia in support of Russian separatists in the area.  Reports Reuters:

South Ossetia’s rebel leader Eduard Kokoity said there were "hundreds
of dead civilians" in the main town Tskhinvali, Russia’s Interfax news
agency quoted him as saying.

. . . Saakashvili [Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili] told reporters: "This is a clear intrusion on another
country’s territory. We have Russian tanks on our territory, jets on
our territory in broad daylight." He ordered a full-scale mobilization
of military reservists.

Some say Russia has been spoiling for a fight for quite a while .  Writes TimesOnline.co.uk:

Georgia accuses Russia of fermenting [sic] trouble in both regions and supporting
the separatist governments as a way to put pressure on Georgia and foil its
attempts to join Nato. Russia has given out passports to a majority of South
Ossetians and Abkhazians. The UN Security Council met to discuss the
situation this morning but failed to agree on a Russian statement calling on
both sides to renounce force.

It’s been clear for a while that the Russian bear is no longer in hibernation, and this attack is no surprise to those who have been following developments in the region.  Let’s pray that not too many more innocent lives are lost.

Well it looks like the US and NATO are reaping what they sow. They bombed Serbia for trying to stop the theft of their land and then handed Kosovo over to a Radical Islamic country that supports terrorism. This was totally contrary to laws forbidding it. Now we have Russia throwing it back at us. “Do as I say not as I do.” just doesnt work. The whole Balkan war was a farce created by Germany and the Vatican. Now look what it has gotten the world. Look at the precedent it has set. What comes around goes around.

I knew that Russia was going indirectly pick a fight with the U.S. when part of our military and it’s spending is going to Iraq. Instead of invading Iraq, we probably should have offed Putin. He’s one dangerous man who should have been stopped a long time ago.

Mike, you are dead on about the U.S. handing Kosovo into the hands of Radical Islamists. The Serbs were one of our greatest allies during WW2 and this is how we repay them.
Russia is a danger. We see its alliances with Iran, Venezuela, and again with Cuba, and China. Its economy is booming primarily due to the price of oil. After all, its oil companies are state-run.
The increased revenue is allowing them to rebuild and enhance their military.
Putin, and now Medvedev, are systematically removing whatever freedoms still exist.
    This is serious.

I guess hell froze over, because democrat brought up a point I agree with! 😉
Although assassination of Putin as democrat recommends is not something our military should be used for, I get the feeling that the mettle of the US military’s capabilities are going to be tested in this incident, as our forces are spread thin in other areas. This is a tense time, with a hotly contested presidential and legislative election, and with many of our troops tied down elsewhere, it might become a case of “while the cats away, the mice will play.” The world is watching and how this plays out might have many of our enemies re-evaluating their positions once again.
And Mike’s analysis of the one-sided treatment of Serbia is correct too – one of the biggest disgraces of our time.

Larry I couldn’t agree more about hell freezing over because I, too, agree with democrat that Putin should have been taken out.
Those of us that have been monitoring the threats of Russia and China have been accused of fear-mongering, but the threats can’t be denied anymore.
China is at war with us economically and from a spying standpoint, and we see what Russia is all about.

In all honesty, this is something that I’ve feared for a long time. It seems to me that all of our enemies will band together in hopes our our demise. Both the middle east and china have been systematically attacking our economy in various ways, and russia has been attempting to incite a war ever since they lost the cold one in the 1980’s. I believe we should have prepared better for this moment.

democrat… Can’t even give you a compliment, you sissy. Sorry I called you a man. That clearly is the farthest thing from what you are. I guess I can understand why you were insulted. Now go do your nails. I apologize.

What’s wrong Cowboy, did your cousin grow tired of you and your advances? Now please, go somewhere and play because I’m busy talking to adults who are not incestuous.

    democrat,
But buddy…I like “playing” with you! You’re like some circus geek or twisted freak show queen. I can see you sitting at your keyboard with smug, undeserved, superiority thinking:
“Man…I am such a profound, deep guy. Why are these ordinary people looking to this Selwyn Duke (or “Puke” as you so cleverly and regularly characterize him?) Why I’ve got all the answers, it’s me! I’m witty and sophisticated and this redneck Cowboy hick keeps making fun of me because I’m gay. It’s not right. And it makes me just want to tear a tissue! After all, nobody can keep up with me. I am enlightened and so very intelligent.”
Well, don’t fret now sweetheart. I’m just funnin’ with you. But, I do think that somehow you’ve got a thing for my only cousin. He’s getting out of the penitentiary soon (don’t worry, it was nothing serious.) Why don’t you leave me your name and address and I’ll show you I’m not such a narrow, right-wing guy. I’ll hook you two up when he gets out.
He just might enjoy playing with you too!
    Your Pen-Pal,
    Cowboy

Come on Clownboy, he’s not your only cousin. He’s just the one you’re in love with. And I guess it’s o.k. because things like this are accepted in your family; you can tell by the way you think that your mother and father were probably first cousins, or brother and sister. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have better things to do with my time than to sit here and communicate with an inbreed.

“Clownboy”…Now, that’s a good one! Here when I was starting to think that you were a witless dullard with the command of language on a level with a middle-school valley-girl, here you come back with a snappy retort like that. Good for you! You can’t let yourself be thought of as an unimaginative slug, lacking all subtlety and guile; which honestly, I was coming to think of you as. I know you are very busy with all the important world class stuff you do every day. But keep in touch….
    Cowboy, oh heck…Clownboy!
    ha ha ha
(Man, I see what you mean. How can anybody keep up with you silly?)

Russia is a country void of identity since the fall of the USSR. These moves by Putin are a dangerous attempt to reclaim a sense of national pride and unity. On one hand it is hard to blame him because the alternitive is to go the way of France and the EU. Wraith nations.
