By Selwyn Duke

Surprising many a political prognosticator, John McCain has announced that his running mate will be 44-year-old Sarah Palin, Alaska’s first female governor.  Honestly, I can’t say I’m surprised, as I told someone just a week ago that she could be the choice.  The question is, is she a good choice?

It’s obvious why McCain chose Palin.  He has garnered
an inordinate amount of support from women voters, and it is felt that her
presence will solidify and perhaps even increase that support.  She also
is the yin to his yang.  He is the establishment candidate — the old
white guy — while she is the Republican Obama, the "face of the
future" (I’m not so sure how long our future will be).  He is 72, she
is 44; he is a Washington insider, she has never been there; his claim to fame
is experience, hers is freshness.

These qualities and others might make her the “please all of the people,
all of the election time” candidate.  Unlike Joe Lieberman, she is sufficiently conservative to placate the
Republican base; unlike Mitt Romney, she has no record of flip-flopping; and,
unlike Tom Ridge, she boasts outsider status and a complete lack of
consanguinity with the unpopular Bush administration, making her appealing to
undecided voters.  She also hails from a
big oil-producing state, the home of ANWR.  Thus, who better to preach
the very effective "Drill here, drill now" message?  After all, when Palin says
"here," it really is where she lives.  On top of all this, she is
regarded to be that most oxymoronic of breeds, an honest politician, a
reputation won with a sterling record as a crusader against corruption.

Yet I have to wonder about the wisdom of this decision.  First, I get the
feeling that, with all that has been made of McCain’s age, many voters are
looking for a vice-presidential candidate who is at least as ready to take the
helm as McCain himself.  Palin, however, has no more
"experience" than Barack Obama, and she has less
"education."  Now, I have those two words in quotation marks
because I know such factors to be little more than superficial measures.
After all, what does a given politician usually have experience in?  Lying
to get elected, fleecing the people through taxation and enacting intrusive
laws and regulations?  As for education, as G.K. Chesterton said, the most
important variety is received at your mother’s knee.  Wisdom and a sound
grasp of governance are what matter, and those qualities cannot be imparted by
a left-wing propaganda mill.

But that is the ultimate reality, and, in election seasons, political reality
dictates that image trumps all.  People are influenced by the superficial,
and experience has been the hammer used against Obama all throughout the
campaign, by both Hillary Clinton in the primaries and the Republicans since
then.  It has been McCain’s strength, and someone such as Romney
would only have augmented it.  Can the same be said about Palin?
Moreover, do the qualities she brings to the table override this defect?

Then we come to the matter of women.  I’m not so sure that Palin will be
able to help deliver them (not to mention disaffected male Clinton voters) to
the ticket.  These women did glom onto Clinton, as she captured their very
questionable imaginations and represented their hopes. Yet the Alaskan governor is not the New York
senator. Oh, don’t misunderstand me, I
much prefer Palin, but remember, again, what will carry the day here isn’t the
ultimate reality, but political reality. And, quite frankly, women don’t always like other women; in fact,
they’re famous for sometimes hating them. So will the fairer sex fall in behind Palin? I’m not so sure.

At the end of the day, I have to wonder if the McCain
campaign was snookered by political correctness and thought themselves out of a
more obvious, and perhaps more prudent, decision. Sure, the fear might have been that choosing
someone like, let’s say, Romney, would have made the ticket too white, too
male, too old, and too Establishmentarian. But sometimes you just "have to dance with the girl you
brung"; sometimes you have to play to your strengths and understand that
while you may be a one-trick pony, you can play that trick better than anyone.

Maybe,
just perhaps, in these times of war, global instability and economic unease, an
establishment thoroughbred is just the horse everyone would have bet on.

This was the absolute worse choice that John McCain could have made. He says that Obama has no experience, but who the hell is she? She hasn’t even been in government for a very long time, and her experience as a Mayor of a small town and then a 1-year Governor doesn’t qualify. And besides, he doesn’t even have a record of voting for or agreeing with women’s issues, so why, other than pandering to being P.C. or to P.U.M.A., would he have chosen this woman? Everyone sees through this, and yet again this speaks to his character and his lack of judgement.

Duke, I love ya but, your wrong when you say she doesnt have more experience then Obummer. Don’t get me wrong, I’m certainly not defending McCain’s pick. As a matter of fact I’m quite disgusted, and discouraged. What a total miss on his part. If he picked Romney it was a sure landslide. He was only trying to get the vote of the disgruntled Hillary supporters, as it is true to his “crossing party lines” reputation. If he picks Romney the country is safe for 12 years…instead he picks a no name, leaving us all to scramble and inform ourselves about her. He will still win. It won’t be close. I still dont trust him after the immigration thing…actually there is no “after” it’s just been swept under the rug for now. Two parties, two iffy at best candidates, two bad choices for runningmates, and two minutes til midnight = ONE OLIGARCHY!

    Mr. Duke,
I, too, respectfully disagree. McCain couldn’t have picked Romney. You overlooked one silly but powerful weapon McCain would have handed to the Obama camp – TOO MANY houses between the two men.
And in today’s political climate the CHANGE brand is trumping the EXPERIENCE brand. McCain wisely observed this in the Dem primary (Hillary’s experience lost out to Obama’s change, hope.)
The Palin pick is a wise one. McCain has re-energized the conservative base as none of the other short listers could have. He’s brought in a governor with executive experience, an outsider to clean up Washington waste, reinforcing the Maverick. Her knowledge on energy does overlap with world affairs – her views on ANWAR, domestic drilling, the location of Alaska will support a strong US policy is these times of global instabilty.
I’m excited to watch Sarah the Barracuda over the next 2 months!

Mr. Duke, remember Romney was never even a bona fide conservative. Rather just an opportunistic pretender who changed his colors when it was too late and consequently couldn’t win the nomination. He gave an inspiring concession speech when he bowed out but that’s about it. What’s the use in lamenting the fact that Mccain didn’t pick someone who was never truly a hardcore conservative? Sarah Palin has legitimate conservative credentials. She’s definitely not an ideal pick based on experience, but on the other hand a very shrewd choice to offset one of Hussein’s main advantages with fickle independents i.e. being a politically correct choice just because he’s black! Sad to say but this will certainly attract voters who choose based on non-factors like race, gender, or ethnicity (unless of-course they pertain to whitey, male, or Anglo). Conservatives will have to come out to vote for Mccain to prevent the unthinkable horror, so he knows he can afford to take us for granted. But by choosing Palin he’ll attract more votes which he could not have done by choosing another white guy (albeit a qualified one) and perpetuating slanderous stereotypes about republicans – which is why this was a great chess move. It’s disgraceful that we have to cater to being politically correct when choosing a VP but hopefully we’ll get this one out of the way and be done with it once and for all. Now imagine the uproar if the Maverick had the balls to choose ALAN KEYES…one can only fantasize about such a dreamy inversed scenario…

    Worst Case Scenario:
John McCainn suffers a heart attack and dies (very possible at his age).
Sarah Palin steps up as commander and chief and faces a situation where Russia decides to step into another NATO country – or faces another 911 ….. Will she be ready to face the challenge and make the right judgement (after reading all the fine print and lies transmitted to her by the war mongers ?)… Doubt it.
This lady is not a presidential candidate and anyone running on a 2nd slate should be ready to be president in an instant.
Bad choice for America – maybe good choice to win some votes.
Bottomline: Are we all about electing someone who is more electable on political nuissance or electing the most qualified and ready to execute.
    Pallin – a bad choice as vice-president.
ps. She should be taking care of her 5 yo with Down syndromme instead of spending all hours of her day on a campaign and a job that demmands to much time away from her kid (Now…that’s sound judgement from a mother)…NOT !

A successful Pres or Vice is one who appoints good advisors. No one man or woman is an expert on everything. As a matter of fact the President is the worlds biggest plagarist. They take all of the credit for someone elses ideas and the heat for their failures. If McCain dies and Palin steps in…No biggie if the right advisors are appointed. Any intelligent person can fill the Presidents chair, however the difference between a good and bad one is their character and moral compass.
Palin is a smart lady, with the ability to inspire. Her character appears to be far more upright than any who have applied for the job in a while. She will do just fine.

Yes Palin was a great choice.
The O-man, Barack Hussein Obama, is an eloquently tailored empty suit. No resume, no accomplishments, no experience, no original ideas, no understanding of how the economy works, no understanding of how the world works, no balls, nothing but abstract empty rhetoric devoid of real substance.
He has no real identity. He is half-white, which he rejects. The rest of him is mostly Arab, which he hides but is disclosed by his non-African Arabic surname and his Arabic first and middle names as a way to triply proclaim his Arabic parentage to people in Kenya . Only a small part of him is African Black from his Luo grandmother, which he pretends he is exclusively.
What he isn’t, not a genetic drop of, is ‘African-American,’ the descendant of enslaved Africans brought to America chained in slave ships. He hasn’t a single ancestor who was a slave. Instead, his Arab ancestors were slave owners. Slave-trading was the main Arab business in East Africa for centuries until the British ended it.
Let that sink in: Obama is not the descendant of slaves, he is the descendant of slave owners Thus he makes the perfect Liberal Messiah.
It’s something Hillary doesn’t understand – how some complete neophyte came out of the blue and stole the Dem nomination from her. Obamamania is beyond politics and reason. It is a true religious cult, whose adherents reject Christianity yet still believe in Original Sin, transferring it from the evil of being human to the evil of being white.
Thus Obama has become the white liberals’ Christ, offering absolution from the Sin of Being White. There is no reason or logic behind it, no faults or flaws of his can diminish it, no arguments Hillary could make of any kind can be effective against it. The absurdity of Hypocrisy Clothed In Human Flesh being their Savior is all the more cause for liberals to worship him: Credo quia absurdum, I believe it because it is absurd.
Thank heavens that the voting majority of Americans remain Christian and are in no desperate need of a phony savior.
His candidacy is ridiculous and should not be taken seriously by any thinking American.

The only ridiculous candidate in the running for office would be Palin, and of course McLame for choosing her, which in effect would make it two ridiculous candidates. McLame’s experience in Vietnam isn’t a good enough reason for anyone to vote for him, neither does military service make one more patriotic than the next, especially if the next never had any military experience. That would mean that most of the population isn’t patriotic, since most of them have not military background.
I agree that an intelligent voter would measure a man, or a woman, by his or her choices in his or her campaign. There is an obvious fact that just because someone is in a state that’s close to another country doesn’t mean that they have foreign policy experience, as spoken by Palin herself. So I guess that would mean that all the governors of all the northern and southern borders of the U.S. have foreign policy experience because they can “see” land in Canada and Mexico if they look out from their backyards. If this isn’t the dumbest statement made by someone seeking an office a heartbeat away from the presidency, then I don’t know what is. And, this goes back to the choices that McLame has made in his effort to attract the PUMA’s who were in support of Hillary. This is nothing more than a political ploy by the republican party and by us being in perilous times, now is not the time for the same games that are the stuff of Karl Rove and company.
It’s funny how someone can say that Obama isn’t ready to be the next president, who might I add is a Harvard graduate and only had to attend one school when our republican VP candidate attended 5 and didn’t even know what the Bush doctrine was. How pathetic must voters be to support a candidate that knows nothing about anything and won’t answer any tough questions concerning the issues because most likely, she wouldn’t have an answer for them. This would either indicate one of two things: 1) You would be voting for her because she’s a republican and never mind the fact that she’s dumb as a stick, or 2) she’s white and you only believe that the only “qualified” candidates are white ones who attend 5 different schools to achieve 1 Bachelors degree. And this is the person that you think would be ready to lead this country if something happens to McLame? If either one of these reasons apply to you, then you are a pathetic loser who really shouldn’t have the right to vote.
In any event, the bottom line is this: The last 8 years are enough to make the average person see that the Bush policies aren’t working, nor would the continuation of them work which would be provided by McLame/Palin. This country is in need of serious repair, and that wouldn’t happen with these two republican idiots.

The Bush Doctrine, according to the one who first coined the phrase pre-9/11, Charles Krauthammer, has four distinct meanings; therefore, Sarah Palin was right to ask, “In what respect?” and Gibson was wrong to project that the Bush Doctrine only had one meaning. Disappointingly, neither you nor Mr. Gibson have been able to provide an explanation as to which Bush Doctrine he was referring.
It became clear that ABC’s Mr. Gibson didn’t want to come across as a softy a la This Week’s, George Stephanopoulos when he quickly corrected Mr. Obama four days ealier. Mr Obama spoke of, “My Muslim Faith,” to which George Steph corrected him, “You mean your Christian Faith.” ABC has a reputation to uphold afterall – surely they wouldn’t want to be accused of media bias.
It is well known that many, many academia are liberal democrats but I would never mistake confusing you with a college professor. If you are interested in additional schooling a course in etiquette would be a logical place to start.

Vivienne, a much more logical place to start in the correction of your miseducation is kindergarten, especially if you continue to support idiots like Palin and McLame. Oh, I almost forgot, you’re an idiot, so why wouldn’t you support your own kind.
You and people like you in the media are so hell-bent on getting another republican in the white house until you are willing to send our country to hell in a handbasket instead of placing a well-educated, highly intelligent individual in office who of course knows all parts of the Bush doctrine. The funny thing is that when she responded to Mr. Gibson, you could tell by her facial expression that she had no idea what either one of them was, let alone the specific one Gibson was speaking of. So, go ahead and keep making excuses for these idiots on your ticket, although really, that’s all you can do. Instead of focusing on the issues that are important to most Americans right now, you all distort the truth, tell lies, and avoid any hard-hitting questions where the answers just might require a bit of thought and substance. This election isn’t about whether or not Obama is a Muslim, but instead where either one of the candidates, once in office, will attempt to place us on a path that will correct this administrations domino effect of disaster.
And ms. vivienne, being that you support the McLame/Palin ticket, no one will mistake you for intelligent.

    Dear Loyal Democrat,
Blind faith will never replace fact. Your suppositions on Gov. Palin’s responses are conjecture – almost a wishful thinking “gotcha moment.” But that didn’t happen did it? She addressed all issues asked of her – none were above her “pay grade.”
Your blind faith also leads you to places not yet fully realized by the rest of America. You mention Barry’s education record – Please do share your inside knowledge as the rest of America remains very curious why Barack won’t release such records.
You said that Barry “is a Harvard graduate and only had to attend one school.” – why discount his two years at Occidental College before transferring to Columbia University?
Also of importance to you is “placing a well-educated, highly intelligent individual in office.” Could you share his transcripts with the rest of us?
What’s to hide? Is it that affirmative action could possibly have secured him a spot for which he might not otherwise have been eligble? Affirmative Action isn’t something to be ashamed of, is it Democrat?
I look forward to Obama and McCain going head to head on issues during the upcoming debates. Until then we are left to examine their character and their records – Unfortunately Barack doesn’t believe Americans should be privy to his education transcripts – this leaves open questions of his judgment and his charater.
I also look forward to more name calling in your replies – a rudimentary tactic most have abandoned once out of kindergarten but something the left resorts to when reality bites.

If Affirmative Action isn’t something to be ashamed of, then why not acknowledge that it applies with the nomination of Palin as V.P.? After all, McCain has a record of being very anti-woman and the fact that Barack didn’t choose Hillary as a running mate is a clear indication that he will do anything to win at the cost of the American public. If you can look at the situations that are going on with this country and be happy with it, and also look at the very negative campaign tactics of the McLame ticket, then you are seriously in need of an injection of intelligence and integrity.
No matter what you say, he as a congressman had more people in his district than she has in the state of Alaska. And your blind faith as you call would enable you to support someone who has no respect for your sex, in so much that you won’t be able to choose what to do with YOUR body or even get equal pay for the same work as men. Now, if this isn’t a disservice to your sex, then I don’t know what is.
No matter what you may call it, the only rudimentary tactic is to support the people who clearly represent the stuff, according to Karl Rove, even less than he. But again, no one has yet to mistake you as intelligent, so you won’t understand.

If, If, If . . . . again more suppositions.
“Barack didn’t choose Hillary as a running mate is a clear indication that he will do anything to win at the cost of the American public.” Or rather wouldn’t do the obvious to win . . . she did get 18 million votes afterall. But when you’re “The One” it’s all good!
And that thing about the sexes Democrat? That’s where our parties differ. Liberals rely on putting every group into a different class; by race, by gender, by sexual preference etc – So that the govt can swoop down and rescue citizens from the evil class warfare liberals have perpetuated. It’s like attempting to put out a fire with an oversized fireplace bellow.
So you see, your concerns about Gov. Palin’s involvement with my body is just more of that hot smoke. I am perfectly capable of protecting my own reproductive system.
I do respect her and Senator McCain’s view on life – ALL LIFE not just one chosen class or another. This is an area in direct conflict with Mr. Obama’s Christian faith and yet his political conscience leads him elsewhere – not sure how he reconciles this? His four NO votes against Banning Live Birth Abortions is chilling – Infanticide as his democratic colleagues describe it.

Notice how you keep missing the point Vivienne? Your intelligence is so much in short supply that it’s scary to think that you have the ability to vote for anyone. The problem with your candidates is the fact that they are so hypocritical until it’s pathetic. These good Chrisitians that you speak so well of have both been married twice to Obama’s once. They have been in situations where adultery were an issue to Obama’s none. One has an unwed pregnant teenager whom they are forcing to marry because it’s good for P.R. Now, studies have shown that marriages between adults for the sake of children don’t work, so what makes them think that a forced marriage between two kids are going to work for the sake of a baby? Not to mention, she has all the solutions and ideas for everyone elses children and how their lives should run, but hasn’t gotten a clue about what’s going on in her own house. Then, your other candidate married his woman on the side after leaving his disfigured wife to fend for himself. Now, do these really sound like “Christian” values? Not to mention that just two days ago, McCain said that the fundamentals of our economy are strong, but today on a talk show, he said that the economy is in a crisis. He has also taken over Obama’s campaign slogan of change, and tell me when have you ever seen an older person “change” anything?
As far as abortion is concerned, Obama really has shown us how he feels about the issue, and how everyone should feel about it. Remember the line in the Bible about judging others? If someone wants to have an abortion, or do anything else wrong in their lives, it’s really an issue between that person and their God, not you and others who just want to point fingers at a person for being wrong. The reason I brought up all those things about your candidates is because they think that it’s perfectly fine to inject their judgments on others when last I checked, God doesn’t need any help, and in particularly from them.
One thing to remember about these candidates is not so much of who they are or what they believe in, but the fact that the decisions they make will effect all of us, and this is a country where we have certain freedoms and have the ability to celebrate those. They also appoint people who will be serving in very important places. Based on the rupublicans judgment, or lack thereof, they are not the people I want deciding who sits in what seat.

Do you think it neccessary to review Obama’s record of humanity while listening to incendiary rhetoric in Rev. Wright’s church for past twenty years? Surely, even you can’t be blind to this type of “faith”.
Just so we’re clear on the Bible – killing the innocent is a Mortal Sin. And for true believers such as Barry, Christians believe in Judgment Day – creating policy to justify infanticide is something he’ll need to reconcile at a later date. Or maybe not, as I’ve said here often, he does aspire to be The One.

    Demi,
Earlier time constraints didn’t allow for a full examination of your text – but upon further review the logic is beyond faulty, it’s scary.
“Obama really has shown us how he feels about the issue, and how everyone should feel about it . . . If someone wants to have an abortion, or do anything else wrong in their lives, it’s really an issue between that person and their God, not you and others . . .”
So shall we throw open the US borders and let in all of humanity? And if some happen to be terrorists or drug runners will Barack expect them to just settle up with their allah?
“One thing to remember about these candidates is not so much of who they are or what they believe in, but the fact that the decisions they make will effect all of us, and this is a country where we have certain freedoms and have the ability to celebrate those.”
Don’t we vote on candidates based on who they are and what they believe in? Decisions are based on their convictions, right?
So what does it say about a senator/presidential candidate who has voted to allow babies be left to die, who are born alive to unsuccessful abortions. These are babies living and breathing on their own – outside their mother’s womb. Could you please explain what freedoms these young individuals would be allowed to “celebrate” under President Obama?

This step is often the last point of regression. It is quite common for the chantee to observe other chantees with a critical eye. Soon they realize the obnoxious vision of the other chantees has been burned into their memory and is meerly a reflection of themself. This is folloed by depression and then awakening. Dummycrat, each time you open your pie hole you come across as such a mean rabid rambling schizoid fool. You’re just a running joke on this site, don’t you have the sense to realize that? You defile this place with your filthy disgraceful comments and contribute nothing. A degenerate twit like you should be posting on moveon where your hateful delusions are welcomed. Although we kind of pity you because you’ve been lied to your whole life rendering you incapable of differentiating between truth and fiction, that’s not a pass for you to continue posting vile vicious convulsions from your verbal diarrhea. Vivienne showed a lot of class by being pinpointed with you but your demented brain is incapable of absorbing facts nor being intellectually honest and you lashed out like a mental patient in an institution. Do us all a favor wipe your fascist slobbering liberal lip, maybe change the prescription, and crawl back into your fantasy hole where the Easter bunny & tooth fairy & magical fairy dust will make it all better …there there now Mary… everything will be ok …shhh..shhh

Oh great, just what I needed. A sarcastic response from an insignificant prick like h.c. These are big boys and girls who I’m pretty sure can take care of themselves. If they have responses, I’m also pretty sure they would have no problem with the delivery. But, I see you want some attention so I’m responding to you. There………………… Next time, don’t hold your breath, idiot.

Don’t flatter yourself Mr. McClever. I do run an online Dingbat patrol or stalk you. You just happen to be the one in the way at the time. The point I make is there is a difference between an argument and an assault. An argument has points and context or an intelectual disagrement. An assault is an offensive action without intelect.
