New York Law Would Enroll All Residents as Organ Donors

Living in New York has long cost an arm and a leg. Now dying there
may cost a kidney and a heart. Under a proposed law, all state residents
would automatically be enrolled as organ donors — without their
consent.

Proposed by Democrat Assemblyman Richard Brodsky, the law would
presume consent and allow for the harvesting of a deceased resident’s
body parts unless the person had taken the step of opting out of the
program. Reporting on the story, the Daily News presents an e-mail from Brodsky on the subject,
which in part reads:

    I think Europe already does this. And its quite possibly one of the biggest scams in history. Organ donation in general is a scam. Literally everyone wins with organ donation. The people who harvest it, the guy who transports it, the hospital who is hosting the operation, the doctors who perform the procedure, and of course, the person who gets the organ……gets a new organ. Everyone wins…..except either the donor (if they are still alive) or the donors survivors.
    Do I get anything for checking “yes” on organ donation? No. Not a damn thing. Not a tax break. Not a 1 time payment. Not a bump on the list of organ donation if I need an organ donation one day. Not even so much as a free value meal at burger king.
    And thats why I’ll never be an organ donor for anyone besides someone I know/knew.

    Dan, maybe I’m wrong but I’d be willing to bet that if you needed a transplant you would be willing to take it from any donor. I have to admit that I’m a little squeamish about donating parts of my body after death; however, I can’t deny that what Dave Undis said isn’t right. If you are not willing to give, then you should not be getting a transplant ahead of someone who did make the decision to donate, if they can.

    Selwyn is more than prescient when he describes this as a “slippery slope”. When I read it, my thoughts went to the ingenious parody of the Monty Python comedy troupe in their movie “The Meaning of Life” and the scene where beauracrats come for a man’s liver, and find him yet alive (I’m still using it!) and nevertheless cut into him despite his desparate (yet hilarious) protests.
    My next thought then went to a great and profound speech given by the (bar NONE) greatest Holy Man of our lifetimes, His Holiness Pope John Paul II regarding the culture of death that now pervades Western society.
