Not that long ago, it was common for the hate-America-first crowd to say that our Mideast military adventures were “all about oil.” Oddly, we never actually saw that oil or benefited from greater black gold supplies until we ramped up our own domestic production. But now some are saying that Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine is “all about oil” — and this time, the claim may actually be true.

China’s treatment of Uighars is much more a concern than a turf battle between Russia and one of its former republics. If we can tolerate China’s genocide, we can certainly avoid threats of military action against this much less awful behavior by Russia. I’d take it easy on economic sanctions as well because the Russian people will suffer more deprivation than Putin and his cronies ever would. I think NATO is the main issue here and the obvious bargaining tool. There’s just not enough justification for destroying the friendly relationship we’ve had with Russia for the past twenty years or so. Why the tendency towards overreaction here and under reaction with China? I also suspect that the US has its own black gold at stake in the form of defense contractors wishing to keep demand for weapons high. The people agitating for military intervention aren’t the good guys; our bombs would kill just as many innocent people as Russia’s. Instead, We need to clean up our corrupt military while avoiding economic dependency on the military-industrial complex. The US is corrupt. Stop pretending otherwise.
