There’s a certain “strategic blunder of potentially epic proportions” that the West is making, wrote cold warrior and Russia expert George F. Kennan decades ago. It will lead to “a new Cold War” with Russia, he also predicted, “probably ending in a hot one.” That new Cold War came.

And now the hot one has come, in Ukraine.

That strategic blunder was one that some, even now, aim to exacerbate. And it is this: the expanding of NATO — right up to Russia’s borders.

Kennan was no appeaser, mind you, nor was he a war hawk.

Great article, Selwyn. I’ve been aghast at the high-level militaristic response to Putin. It seems there may be some other reason for taking this opportunity of many similar actions by Russia. I’m not saying I’m comfortable with Putin’s choices but negotiation and compromise would’ve allowed Ukrainians to stay in their homes. Why the threats and pressure tactics from the EU and the US? Why alienate Russia rather than befriend it?

Yes, the actions of others were wrong regarding Russia, but to invade without trying alternative means to achieve results is Putin’s failure. He could have called me to be judge, but since I’m an unknown and knew little of the situation in Ukraine, but can think when needed on-the-fly . . . oh well.
They, whoever drew the map after the breakup of the USSR, screwed it up and is responsible. These are not good times for multi-ethnic countries. Being placed in harms way adds to the tensions, so, yes, there is blame to go around as noted already.
For us out in the Western States, the straight lines of our states defy reason, but they have been made. Drawing borders by splitting reality from the truth is not good. The current Ukraine is such a case as are many others around the World.

    Dear TJ and Eric,
Thank you for responding. Yes, as I wrote, we missed a golden opportunity to reboot our relationship with Russia. There was nothing to lose by rolling those dice.
On a darker note, I have a source who claims that Putin really is unhinged at this point, as some have theorized. If that’s so, then he poses a dire threat to the world. All most of us can do at this point is spread the Truth and pray.
    God bless,
