George Washington StatueBy Selwyn Duke

When even your archrival praises you, with nothing to gain, you know it means something. So it’s most notable what “The Last King of America,” George III, said about George Washington’s refusal to become the first king of these United States.

“If he does that,” said the monarch, upon hearing that Washington would relinquish power and return to his farm post-Revolutionary War, “he will be the greatest man in the world.”

Washington did do that, too — twice. Though the story about him being offered the kingship of America is exaggerated, that sentiment did exist, and Washington rejected the proposal unreservedly. He also not only resigned his military commission after the war, but also resisted entreaties to seek a third term as his second one as president was concluding. In the process, he helped forge the greatest civilization history has ever known.

    You are quite right.
Personal conduct, virtue, manners, and so forth create an atmosphere in which society exists in. Rising or falling with the times, the conduct of people is made by each of us. Striving to better one’s conduct when alone or in a crowd marks a society more than is realized. Each man and woman has the opportunity for seeking greater for which they alone measure to build the foundation of their society.
As with Washington, what we may seek is one thing, however, when reasons become vast to rise, to do more than we may want to do, we should not shirk our duty to each other, or ourselves, and take hold of the occasion to secure our future.
Some do this, not for glory, but because it is the right thing to do for their society. When done achieving the task, those people return and assume their life as before. Humble and thoroughly able in strength and wisdom is what a society needs if it wants to remain decent and worthwhile.
Generics aside, such is our situation today for wise action of a strong nature for our future. Selfless men are strong, dictators are not.
