• Cell Phones Have Been Called “Digital Heroin.” So, Should We Ban Them in School?

    SmartphoneBy Selwyn Duke

“There was a time, not that many years ago, really, when we would actually get into an argument because we didn’t want to answer the phone,” quite funny and mostly clean comedian James Gregory once said during an act. “It’d be like, ‘You get it; I got it last time!’”

Boy, the world sure has changed. Back then, Gregory continued, the phone was an interruption, taking time away from what you really wanted to do. Now it is what people want to do.

In fact, “screen addiction” is a real phenomenon, so much so that researchers have called electronic devices “digital heroin.” As a result, a movement to ban cell phones in schools is gaining momentum. There’s also been pushback, however. Many are reluctant to live life without that continual digital fix.

  • Obama Stumping for Kamala: Hating and Race-baiting

    Prejudice SignBy Selwyn Duke

“Leave this world a little better than you found it,” advised the creator of the Scouting movement, Robert Baden-Powell. Critics might say, and are saying in so many words, that ex-President Barack Obama has failed on this score. He still is failing, too, and his recent campaigning for Kamala Harris is a case in point.

In fact, writes one observer, Obama this week had his “racism on full display.”

  • Cultural Decay: Now, Even Many “Elite” College Students “Can’t Read Books”

    BooksBy Selwyn Duke

When hearing that many “elite” undergraduates “can’t” read books, first coming to mind could be that they’re not actually elite. (The term “pseudo-elite” suggests itself.) As for the word “can’t,” no, it’s not that these college students, often Ivy Leaguers, are illiterate. The issue is something different: conditioning.

  • The Necessity of Intolerance

    Bullets on ConstitutionBy Selwyn Duke

If “tolerance is the virtue of the man without convictions,” as G.K. Chesterton put it, a question suggests itself:

Is intolerance the virtue of the principled man?

Literally speaking, neither tolerance nor intolerance is a “virtue”; that is, one of those defined “objectively good moral habits.” Exhibiting each, however, in its proper context, can be virtuous. Even more significantly, wisely applied intolerance is certainly this: necessary for the preservation of virtue in civilization. This task is of the utmost importance, too, as the Founders well understood, Benjamin Franklin among them. “Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom,” he observed. “As nations become more corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters.” Thus do we need “A Plea for Intolerance” — and, thankfully, we have one, in the form of a book chapter by that very title penned by legendary Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen in 1931.

  • FBI Charges 5 Chinese With Spying on U.S. Military — AFTER They’re Out of Custody

    Spy SilhouetteBy Selwyn Duke

The Federal Bureau of Investigation certainly appears to know how to target Trump supporters in the run-up to November’s election. It’s also adept at launching shock-and-awe, pre-dawn raids on the residences of harmless, wizened, elderly men (Roger Stone). But what of protecting the homeland from spies working for our main geopolitical adversary?

Not so much, critics may say.

A case in point is a story about how the FBI has brought charges against five Chinese nationals who were apparently spying near a U.S. military base in Michigan. The problem?

They waited until the quintet was out of custody before taking action.

  • Food Pantry Bans Whites. Left Happy as Long as “Everyone Drowns Equitably” in N.C.

    Prejudice SignBy Selwyn Duke

From each according to his skin color and, well, to each according to his skin color? That’s right, forget the old Marxist formula. Now, in our diversity-über-alles society, calls to equity from the morally bent have a racial bent. This would explain, too, a couple of recent stories.

The first is about a food pantry in Minneapolis that won’t serve white people. (Tim Walz, Kamala Harris’ running mate and Minnesota governor, is going to get busy on this posthaste, right?)

The second concerns the disaster in western North Carolina. Some leftists are essentially saying that the deaths of the area’s rural whites and “MAGA voters” are karma. Meanwhile, critics suspect that federal disaster aid is lacking because of the Harris-Biden administration’s emphasis on FEMA “equity.”

  • Study: Conservatives’ Lies Cause Their Higher Social-media Suspension Rates — So Keep Censoring

Boot on Declaration of IndependenceBy Selwyn Duke

Conservatives, let not your heart be troubled. You are being censored more on social media than liberals are, a new study has discovered. But the researchers can help you solve the problem because, they say, they have identified it.

    You.

The study has “found,” you see, that conservatives endure social-media suspension more only because they share more “misinformation.” The remedy?

Just echo mainstream media in your determinations and, “Voila!” — you can express opinions with complete freedom.

Oh, the researchers did “prove” their thesis, using “fact-checkers” such as Snopes.com. (Never mind that site co-founder David Mikkelson was suspended in 2021 for plagiarizing at least 54 articles. And never mind that Snopes has in the past had to confess that some of its fact-checks were false.)

  • Have You Heard of Fuellmich, the Imprisoned Nuremberg 2.0, “Plandemic” Hero?

Big Man Stepping on Small ManBy Selwyn Duke

You probably have never heard the name Reiner Fuellmich. In fact, not many news sources are covering his story. But Fuellmich, a successful and respected attorney, has been imprisoned in Germany for almost a year. This is despite having been convicted of nothing. But according to the government, he’s guilty of financial crimes; embezzlement appears to be the charge. His defenders, however, say his “trespass” is different.

Fuellmich attempted to hold the powerful responsible for their Covid misdeeds, spearheading a “Nuremberg 2.0” movement. He thereby threatened their power and purse.

So, to paraphrase Stalin right-hand man Lavrentiy Beria, they were shown the man — and the found the crime.

  • CNN Discovers: Democrats’ Kids Are Far MORE Intolerant Than Republicans’ Kids

    Donkey-ElephantBy Selwyn Duke

There’s “wisdom from the mouths of babes” and then there’s, well, what CNN found in a recent study. That is, despite liberals’ chest-thumping about their “tolerance,” they’re not the ones raising tolerant kids. Oh, it isn’t just that “Democrat-leaning” children are far more negative about Donald Trump than “Republican-leaning” children are about Kamala Harris. It’s also this:

Liberals’ kids are five times as likely as conservatives’ children to say they wouldn’t visit a pro-“other” candidate home.

  • “Gun Owner” Kamala Once Sponsored Measure to Seize San Franciscans’ Handguns

    1338996a-0ebd-437e-828e-5fbe2de78a84By Selwyn Duke

In an effort to convince voters she’s not anti-Second Amendment, Kamala Harris often emphatically claims that she herself is a gun owner. She even said, while cackling during her Oprah Winfrey interview, that anyone breaking into her home is “getting shot.” (Does this standard apply to breaking into countries, too?) But her Dirty Harry routine isn’t working with everyone. Just consider an MSN commenter whose post I recently featured as a “Comment of the Day.”

“She’s a gun owner,” the man wrote. “So were Stalin, Hitler and Saddam. Not surprisingly, gun laws did not apply to them, they made sure of it.”

Now evidence has emerged, too, that Harris is also of the mindset, “Guns for me, not for thee.”

That is, nearly two decades ago, the now-Democratic presidential nominee sponsored a measure to seize San Franciscans’ handguns.
