• Obama Nominee Liu Believes Constitution Half Living, Half Breathing

Many have described Obama’s 9th-Circuit nominee Goodwin Liu as
“brilliant,” but he’s not smart enough to know that rules apply to him
    also.

Bullets on Constitution By Selwyn Duke

Like so many people nowadays, Barack Obama’s 9th Circuit Court of
Appeals nominee is a very confused man. He seems to believe that rules
    are made to be broken.

That is, at least by those with the clout to do the breaking.

Goodwin Liu, the University of California, Berkeley law professor
nominated for the 9th Circuit, believes that judges have a right to
impose their values on us from the bench — after, of course, running
the Constitution through the spin cycle and divining from it a
creative, unique meaning heretofore undiscerned by all the greatest
legal minds in the annals of American jurisprudence.

  • Children Directing Planes at JFK: Why it is a Big Deal

Boy Looking at Jet By Selwyn Duke

    By now we’ve all heard
about the air-traffic controller who allowed his kids direct airplanes
at John F. Kennedy Airport last month. Yes, that’s “kids” — plural. It
    is now being
    reported
that after the controller, identified as 49-year-old Glenn Duffy, let
his 8 or 9-year old son take the reins, he followed suit with his
    daughter the next day.

Duffy and his supervisor have been
suspended pending a review of the incidents, but some would go even
further. For example, ABC reports that aviation attorney Mary Schiavo
said, “Given the child was involved with actual air traffic was a
fireable offense … not only a cavalier attitude but a shirking of his
responsibilities.” Retired air traffic controller Bob Richards echoed
the latter part of that comment, calling Duffy’s decision “bad
judgment.” Yet, what concerns me more than the incidents themselves is
the judgment of most citizen respondents.

  • Legal vs. Illegal Murder: Abortion in Utah

Baby in Womb By Selwyn Duke

She is now a healthy baby, bouncing about, playing with bubbles in
the bathtub, and taking in everything this mysterious world she entered
has to offer. But she almost never was.

Or, at least, she almost never was outside the womb.

In fact, she certainly never would have been had the aspiring
abortionist in whose crosshairs she found herself been more skilled.
But, in this case, the man had no medical degree — just consent from
the baby’s mother and a pair of fists and feet.

  • Why Many American Christians Really are Un-Christian

    Confusion-Traffic Signs By Selwyn Duke

In this age of media insolvency
and newsroom job cuts, I sometimes think that restaurant reviewers are doubling
as religion writers.  After all, both
today seem to treat their subjects as matters of taste.  In fact, I expect to soon open a modern
newspaper’s religion page and read something akin to the following:

  • N.Y. Governorship Scandal Hits Again: Paterson Will Not Run

    862858_blog By Selwyn Duke

Damaged by scandal like his predecessor, New York’s Governor David
Paterson has announced that he is withdrawing his bid to win election
    this November.

The governor had been steadfast in his determination to capture a
full term at the ballot box, despite low poll numbers and growing
opposition within his own party. Yet allegations of impropriety in the
handling of a criminal case involving an aide proved the last nail in
his political coffin. Providing a brief outline of the allegations,
    Reuters Ellen Wulfhorst wrote
of reports stating, “he [Paterson] and state police spoke with a woman
who last fall accused a top governor's aide of assault. After speaking
with the governor, the woman failed to appear in court and her case was
dismissed, said the New York Times, which first reported the story. The case raised questions of possible inappropriate intervention by the governor . . . .”

  • Most See Government as Threat to Rights

    2052845_low By Selwyn Duke

Ronald Reagan once said that the nine scariest words in the English
language are “I’m from the government, and I’m here to help.” In thus
opining, he was simply reflecting an American tradition that began with
the Founding Fathers: a healthy suspicion of government.

And, now, despite rampant government dependency, it seems that this
tradition lives on. A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey shows
that 56 percent of Americans consider the federal government an
“immediate” threat to their rights. Not surprisingly, however, where
citizens come down on the question is influenced by political
    affiliation. Writes
CNN’s Paul Steinhauser, “only 37 percent of Democrats, 63 percent of
Independents and nearly 7 in 10 Republicans say the federal government
poses a threat to the rights of Americans.”

  • Killing Charity

“Outsourcing” charity to the government is not only inefficient, it’s not charity. Worse still, it’s evil.

Teamwork-Hands on Hands By Selwyn Duke

A while back I read about a woman whose college professor had told her not to give to charity. His reasoning?

    It’s the government’s job.

I wonder, would the good professor maintain this perspective were he
stuck by the side of a lonely road on a wintery night without cell
phone service? Well, I suppose that’s when Situational Values Man comes
    to the rescue.

  • Students Told to Write Essay on How They Would Make Deal with Devil

Scream of Horror By Selwyn Duke

God may not have a place in the modern American classroom, but the
Devil is a different story. That is, at least in one North Carolina
    high school.

After reading the short story “The Devil and Tom Walker” — which
involves a character who makes a deal with Satan but then balks —
students at Gray's Creek High School in Fayetteville, North Carolina,
were told “to write an essay on how they would sell their souls — or
what trade they would make with the Devil,” writes ABC News.

  • Time to Turn Up the Heat on the Warmists

    Ice Age By Selwyn Duke

At one time some would call
them “deniers.”  The more generous called
    them “skeptics.”  But now, increasingly,
it appears that they can be called something else: sane.  Yes, the climate has certainly changed.

    Even in the mainstream media,
the less liberal organs are waking up.
There is now a never-ending barrage of articles on the climate scam,
with The Washington Times, The Wall Street Journal and the New York Post firing some recent
    salvos.  And these inconvenient truths
are just adding to a case against the Climateers that has become dizzying.

  • High Crimes: White House Accused of Using Bribery to Preserve Senate Majority

Cash and Handcuffs By Selwyn Duke

Has a bombshell just been dropped in the November elections? If a
story that broke on Thursday gets enough ink, the answer may be yes.

It’s being reported that the White House has sought to entice Senate
primary challengers into dropping their campaigns against incumbent
Democrats with the offer of plum government appointments — a jailable
    offense.

Jeffrey Lord of The American Spectator reports on the story, writing:
