• Guest Commentary: And That’s The Way it Wasn’t – Walter Cronkite

    Pinnochio By Bruce Walker

By all accounts, Walter Cronkite was a kindly, almost
avuncular figure.  Many members of the journalist community have written
eulogies of his decency and humility.  He had a long, happy
marriage.  These things should count to us conservatives, who yearn for human
life to be more about how it is lived than in the personal politics of each
individual. We ought to respect, for example, the genuine marital love that
Barack has for Michelle or, for that matter, the love that Jimmy Carter has for
Roselyn.  If we fail to honor those good aspects of our political
opponents, then we run the grave risk of becoming that hideous creation of the
    Left, homo politicus.

  • Obama Regulatory Pick’s Pro-animal Rights and Anti-First Amendment Activism

    Silenced Girl By Selwyn Duke

It’s not surprising that Harvard man Barack Obama wouldn’t share
late writer William F. Buckley’s sentiment that “I would rather be
governed by 400 people out of the phone book than the whole faculty of
Harvard.” In fact, although he won’t manage to fill the Congress with
the staff of his alma mater, he certainly is making sure his
administration is replete with its members.

And Obama is now making another addition to his many Harvard-honed
underlings with the nomination of Cass Sunstein to be head of the
Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs at OMB, a position
commonly known as the “regulatory czar.”

  • Mom Arrested for Having Fat Son

    2052845_low By Selwyn Duke

While America may not have anything resembling Saudi Arabia’s
religious police, called “The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue
and Prevention of Vice,” we do have our own strange version of vice
squads. Only, the trespasses they root out today are less likely to
involve heroin and harlots than Twinkies and trans-fats. And their
latest move is the arrest of a mother and the seizure of her child. Her
crime? Her son is too fat.

Tracy Miller at the Daily News reports on the story, writing,
“A 555-pound teenager in South Carolina is at the center of the latest
legal case to consider whether child obesity is a form of child abuse.”

  • Feminist Folderol: Swedish Parents Refuse to Reveal Sex of Child

Sex Symbols-Confusion A Swedish couple refuses to reveal whether their two-year-old child
is a boy or girl, claiming that “gender” is a “social construction.”

    By Selwyn Duke

Sweden has long been known for pristine lakes and forests,
long-legged blondes and ultra-safe cars, but it’s now distinguishing
itself in another, more dubious, way: as the nation of feminism on
steroids. There was the Swedish elementary school that removed urinals
from the boys’ bathroom because the male practice of standing up while
tending to nature’s call supposedly constitutes “triumphing in
masculinity” and is “degrading to women” (you just can’t make this
stuff up). There were the Swedish parliamentarians who proposed
the “Man Tax,” which men would have to pony up to cover the social cost
of violence against women (I’m tellin’ ya’, you can’t make this up). Of
course, there was no mention whether men would receive a tax rebate for
male-developed scientific and medical advances that enabled female life
expectancy to surpass that of men. Nor was there a counter-proposal for
    a stupidity tax.

In light of the above, it didn’t surprise me to hear the story
of “Pop.” No, Pop isn’t a sparkling beverage, graying patriarch or Rice
Krispies elf. Pop is a two-and-half-year-old Swedish child — a Swedish
child with two very strange Swedish parents. Or, to be precise, two
very strange parents. I cannot say if they’re strange for Swedes.

  • Breaking Story: Computers with Rigged Honduran Election Results Discovered

    552042_low By Selwyn Duke

While much of the world has lined up with Manuel Zelaya, the ousted
president of Honduras, time and truth do not seem to be his cause's
friend. The latest shoe to drop is a shocking Catalan newspaper report
stating that Honduran authorities have discovered 45 computers
containing election results for an election that never took place.

No, this isn't the Twilight Zone — it's the Corruption Zone.

  • Hate-crime Laws Expand, Freedom Contracts

    2052845_low By Selwyn Duke

The Senate has just passed the greatest expansion of federal
hate-crime "protections" since the legislation's inception in 1968.
While the original law was limited to crimes motivated by race,
religion, and ethnicity, the current measure will increase federal
scope to cover "sexual orientation," "gender," "gender identity," and
    disability.

With even some conservatives accepting the concept of hate crime,
such an expansion is not unexpected. But it also should be lamented.
I've pointed out in the past that, as it is generally used, "hate
crime" is a misnomer. And the Senate bill is a good example as to why.
If the goal is to eliminate crimes motivated by hate (most crime?), why
specify categories of people at all? Why not just say that if hate is
the motivating factor in a crime, the perpetrator will be punished more
    harshly?

  • Should Taxes Pay for Abortion, Secularism?

Baby in Womb By Selwyn Duke

Washington, D.C., would be able to use tax money to fund abortions
under a $768 million spending bill passed by the House on July 16. An
AP story carried by FoxNews.com and other media reports:
“The measure passed by a narrow 219-208 margin, with many anti-abortion
Democrats voting against it because of the move by Democratic leaders
to permit the D.C. government to use locally raised tax revenues to
provide abortions — reversing a long-standing ban imposed by Congress.”

And like so many bills in Congress, this one contains a hodge-podge
of different provisions. According to AP, other provisons in the bill
    are designed to:

  • Guest Piece: Work, Jobs, and Wealth

    Shell Game By Bruce Walker

    The
Left has long confused work, jobs, and worth.  The Stimulus Package, the
grand catastrophe, was intended to create and preserve jobs which could make
America poorer, not richer. A century ago nearly everyone in America had a “job,”
and most had jobs on farms.   Men, women, and children got up before
sunrise.  Women slaved with iron stoves to make breakfast, while men and
boys ate in preparation for a long grueling day of generally boring work.
Then the women, after doing all their chores, prepared lunch, and at sundown,
    they made supper.

  • The Prejudice of Atheists

Snake and Apple By Selwyn Duke

Ever since the separation-of-church-and-state ruling in 1947, there
has been an ever-intensifying effort to denude our public sphere of
religious symbols and sentiments. The latest attack is a lawsuit to
prevent “In God We Trust” and the Pledge of Allegiance from being
engraved on the newly-built Capitol Visitor Center in Washington, D.C.

Filed by the Freedom from Religion Foundation, the suit claims that
the mere presence of such engravings is an unconstitutional endorsement
    of religion. FoxNews.com reports
on the story, telling us that the House and Senate passed resolutions
earlier this month authorizing the engraving “in response to critics
who complained Congress spent $621 million on the new three-story
underground center without paying respect to the nation’s religious
    heritage.”
