• The Article That Brought Hate-speech Charges

    By Selwyn Duke

It’s not a new story anymore, but late last year columnist Mark Steyn was summoned to appear before two Canadian "human-rights" tribunals (how is that for an Orwellian euphemism?) to discuss hate-crime charges.  At issue was his piece "The Future Belongs to Islam," which appeared in Macleans magazine and is an excerpt from his book America Alone.  But while I hope that this piques your interest, it’s not why you should read the piece.  No, it’s a must-read because in it Steyn does an almost nonpareil job of illustrating how political correctness and civilizational ennui are imperiling the West.  Here are the first two paragraphs:

  • European Environment Minister Calls Green Position on Climate Change “hysterical psuedo-religion”

    By Selwyn Duke

BBC News is running a piece about British Environment Minister Sammy Wilson.  He is one of those rare politically-incorrect European public figures, as he scoffs at the notion of anthropogenic climate change.  Writes the BBC:

  • Radio Host Sentenced to Prison on Child Porn Charges

    366138_blog
    By Selwyn Duke

Left-wing KGO radio host Bernie Ward has been sentenced to more than
seven years in prison for the distribution of child pornography. Most
people wouldn’t take issue with this, as virtually all consider such
material beyond the pale. But are some of our defenses of adult
    pornography also indefensible?

  • Amazon Censoring Negative Reviews of Pelosi’s Book

    By Selwyn Duke

To be quite frank, many people who write books shouldn’t.  I’ve long been amazed at how most authors have little or nothing of substance say — no Truth to express, only feelings — yet they feel compelled to say it over the course of 300 pages.  Ah, ego just might be more powerful than jet fuel.

So it is with Nancy Pelosi’s ghost-written effort, Know Your Power: A Message to America’s Daughters.  (As a writer, I hold those who use ghost-writers in very low regard.  It’s like if you discovered that Emeril Lagasse had a ghost-cook.  "Oh, yeah, but the recipes have got to be his."  Listen, if you have to do something like that, you’re in the wrong business.  And if something is ghost-written, it should only be ghost-read.)  The book is so pathetically, outrageously banal, shallow and poorly-written that it’s hard to find a positive review of it at Amazon.com.  In fact, it’s staggering how the site’s readers, left, right and center, have almost monolithically labeled it tripe (maybe it’s Pelosi who is a uniter, not a divider).  Yet just as interesting is the allegation that Amazon is censoring negative reviews of the Queen Bee’s borefest.  Writes one reviewer (I omitted his handle):

  • A Global Population Ice Age

    1849394_blog
This article first appeared in the June 23, 2008 issue of The New American magazine.

    By Selwyn Duke

If you’re like most alive today, you grew up with Paul R. Ehrlich’s
Malthusian idea of a “population bomb.” It just seems like common sense
that man will increase his numbers inexorably until, one day, we find
ourselves living a real-life Soylent Green scenario,
sans drama and Charlton Heston to sound that indelible alarm about the
real source of a futuristic, overpopulated world’s food supply,
    “Soylent Green is people!”

  • Catcher in the Rye No Longer Cool

    By Selwyn Duke

Like many alive today, I had to read The Catcher in the Rye in high school.  I can’t really say I learned much from the book, although, just to be fair, I must point out that I wasn’t exactly a dedicated student at the time.  But the work was supposed to be something kids could relate to, as it was about "teen angst."

  • Was Sarah Palin Really the Right Choice for Vice-president?

    By Selwyn Duke

Surprising many a political prognosticator, John McCain has announced that his running mate will be 44-year-old Sarah Palin, Alaska’s first female governor.  Honestly, I can’t say I’m surprised, as I told someone just a week ago that she could be the choice.  The question is, is she a good choice?

  • Jimmy Carter Calls Barack Obama a "Boy"
    http://youtube.com/v/yo09Rx9whWs
In this video, former Democrat president Jimmy Carter calls Barack Obama a "black boy."  To be fair, Carter uttered the comment while speaking of Obama’s youth and upbringing, the time of the senator’s boyhood.  Yet it still bears mention.  After all, could you imagine how the mainstream media would pile on if a conservative had used such characterization?  Would they be as fair as I have with been with Carter?

  • Is the Presidency above Obama’s Pay Grade?

    By Selwyn Duke

    It’s interesting to hear the
euphemisms bandied about in campaigns. After
Barack Obama’s and John McCain’s appearance a week ago at Saddleback Church,
for instance, the former’s ardent supporters were as effusive in their praise
as ever. His stammering and copious
“uhs” weren’t signs of a befuddled and muddled mind, but of “thoughtfulness”
    and “nuanced” thinking.

  • Beware the Biden Bounce

    By Selwyn Duke

The Gallup polling organization says it’s official: There is a bounce associated with Barack Obama’s pick of Joe Biden as his vice-presidential running mate.

    And John McCain got it.
