Some say it was the worst call they’ve ever seen in high-school basketball.

The scene was the recent NJSIAA Group 2 state semifinal game between New Jersey team Camden — a powerhouse that hadn’t lost to another NJ public-school squad in five years — and underdog Manasquan. Down 46-45 after Camden player Alijah Curry sank a couple of free throws, Manasquan drove down the floor with 5.8 seconds left on the clock. One of its players took a long shot, which bounced off the rim — into the waiting hand of teammate Griffin Linstra, who laid the ball up through the hoop, releasing it with 0.6 seconds left on the clock. 

The Central Regional High School gymnasium erupted in celebration, with Linstra’s shot being called good. But then it happened.

A Camden coach ran over and tapped one of the exiting officials, Kevin Torres, on the shoulder, and “a group of Camden coaches pleaded for the referees to meet,” reported NJ.com. The refs then consulted for a short time — and overturned the call. Incredulity among sober observers was the result.

Then there was a secondary result: accusations of anti-white bias.

We “are losing our kids to a satanic cult,” said Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) Friday. “We’ve lost our moral values across the country.”

Tuberville made his comments while speaking to approximately 100 GOP delegates at a warehouse in Bluffdale, Utah, while campaigning for U.S. Senate candidate Trent Staggs, a Republican who’s running to fill the seat being vacated by Senator Mitt Romney.

If you’re wondering why millions of illegals are being allowed to flood our country via an open border, know that there’s method to the madness. For one thing, if these aliens are allowed to stay, points out Senator Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.), they can give Democrats 13 extra congressional seats.

How is this possible? Well, the number of seats a state has is directly proportional to its population size. And when the population is determined via the census, all persons (including illegals) in a state are counted — not just all citizens.

Outrageously, this means states can get congressional seats, and hence greater power, based on the presence of people who (ostensibly) can’t actually vote to determine who’ll fill those seats. Call it congressional seat creation without representation.

Mottos and slogans do sometimes change, for better or worse. Google retired “Don’t be evil” in 2015; some may say rightly so, too, that its standard now is “Don’t be evil — leave that to us.” Reebok had a slogan “Cheat on your girlfriend, not on your workout” that ran only briefly in Germany, for obvious reasons. Nivea had a “White is Purity” slogan that hit the market in 2017 in the Mideast, but was quickly nixed because, as any wokester knows, “white is privilege.” And now media claim that the vaunted military academy West Point has joined the club.

That is, its mission statement “Duty, Honor, Country” has been “exchanged,” media point out, for “Army values.” What are army values?

(Well, it would depend on what army you’re talking about. See Attila the Hun, Genghis Khan et al.)

“We grow too soon old and too late smart,” goes an old Dutch proverb. We all experience this, too, sometimes having a realization and then, if we’re sufficiently humble, thinking “Why didn’t that occur to me sooner?” Yet many might hope (surely in vain) that the people influencing government policy wouldn’t have to wait until they’re 78 to apprehend the obvious. And this is exactly what has happened with one Professor Angus Deaton, an Ivy League economist who now, wizened and just a bit wiser, has finally repudiated his “immigrationism.”

In fairness, though, he’s doing far better than famed “intellectual” the late Henry Kissinger: He was 100 years old when he woke up and warned last year that modern (im)migration is balkanizing the West.

Deaton, writing at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) website, also outlined his renunciation of other long-held beliefs, such as globalism.

But now National Guard troops are on New York City subways to help maintain order — courtesy of left-wing governor Kathy Hochul — and what’s the reaction?

A “Persian flaw” was originally a flaw purposely included in a handmade carpet because, the thinking was, only God could aspire to perfection. ’Tis true, too, that perfection is not a thing of this world. Given this, you may wonder why I write in my title that conservatives must stop issuing disclaimers to the effect of, “We all know our country is not perfect.” Well, consider a little analogy:

Imagine you were giving a speech in honor of your mother and opened with, “Now, we all know my mother’s not perfect.” Might there not be some stunned silence? Is it possible some listeners might view you as a bad child? Moreover, if your mother heard your disclaimer, mightn’t she be hurt?

There’s a multitude of disparities between the sexes, with probably more than 50 percent of them favoring women. Examples would be how 92 percent of workplace deaths involve men, female fashion models being paid notably more than their male counterparts, and women being more likely than men to attend and graduate from college. This isn’t good enough for the social engineers, though: Any disparity favoring men, even in the tiniest little corner of any field, must be highlighted and eradicated under the pretext of “equality.”

“Nine out of ten of what we call new ideas are simply old mistakes,” noted G.K. Chesterton a century ago. This is brought to mind by the modern obsession with “new ideas,” typified by Joe Biden’s implicit touting of them during his State of the Union address.

The issue “isn't how old we are; it’s how old our ideas are,” he said Thursday evening. He’s right, too.

And, usually, the “older” the ideas, the better.

There’s an irony to Biden’s appeal: He doesn’t want to be dismissed out of hand over age.

But he does want ideas dismissed out of hand over age.

(Though there’s a contradiction within this contradiction. More on that momentarily.)

More than 10 years ago already, former plug-in advocate and car designer Ozzie Zehner wrote his essay “Unclean at Any Speed,” in which he warned that electric vehicles (EVs) pollute more than gasoline-powered ones (those with internal combustion engines, or ICE). Now, with a resurfaced study backing up this assertion, a question is raised: Is the greenest thing about EVs the cash being made by those pushing them?
