• Taming the Bench: MAGA Means Ending the Precedent of Judicial Precedent

    Judge pounding GavelBy Selwyn Duke

“It is a maxim among these lawyers, that whatever hath been done before may legally be done again: and therefore they take special care to record all the decisions formerly made against common justice and the general reason of mankind. These, under the name of precedents, they produce as authorities, to justify the most iniquitous opinions; and the judges never fail of decreeing accordingly.” So said Anglo-Irish essayist Jonathan Swift in Gulliver’s Travels in 1726. Unfortunately, something has changed almost three centuries later:

The decisions have perhaps become even more iniquitous.

  • Big Tech Tyranny: Facebook Is at It Again, Trying to Sway an Election

    874847_lowBy Selwyn Duke

Big tech companies absolutely can sway elections, warned an expert last year. And after suppressing conservative content during the 2018 election cycle, Facebook is now at it again. Just two weeks before the upcoming European elections, the “social media” behemoth has banned what Breitbart describes as “23 major populist Italian pages with 2.5 million followers.”

  • Democracy Losing Street Cred as Latin Americans Lose Prosperity

    Failure FigureBy Selwyn Duke

“Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others,” as the saying goes. But those undefined “others” are precisely what Latin Americans may get, as their faith in “democracy” is waning along with their economies. Yet if people say they’re dissatisfied with representative government, isn’t it just another way of saying they’re dissatisfied with themselves (or with most everyone else)?

  • Tolerant Big Brother: Let People Drink, Smoke, and Eat Red Meat, Says Health Minister

    Plate of RibsBy Selwyn Duke

It’s not exactly the sci-fi film Sleeper, in which a futuristic society had learned that deep fat, steak, cream pies, and hot fudge were actually healthful. But it’s shocking nonetheless: Nanny-state Norway's new health minister has said not only that “people should be allowed to smoke, drink and eat as much red meat [as] they just want,” but also that she’s very sympathetic toward a much maligned minority group: smokers. It’s a message that has the Cult of the Body health Nazis smokin’ mad.

  • School May Remove George Washington Mural That “Traumatizes Students”

    Politically CorrectBy Selwyn Duke

No matter the storied American figure, symbol, or tradition, you can bet the culture renders will find a feeling out there to justify its destruction. And so it is at a Northern California school that may remove an 83-year-old George Washington mural that’s supposedly “offensive and demeaning” and “traumatizes students and community members.”

Of course, the mural just might have some relationship to the institution’s name — George Washington High School — which, we can surmise, will one day also be on the chopping block.

  • Colleges’ “Woman-only” Scholarships May Violate Title IX. But Is There a Loophole?

    Arm-wrestling-Man vs. WomanBy Selwyn Duke

In yet another example of how the “equality” agenda makes some people more equal than others, certain American universities still offer scholarships open only to female applicants — and perhaps are in violation of often selectively applied federal regulations. And while these schools are now coming under added scrutiny, there could be a little known loophole that would allow the continuation of the discriminatory policies.

  • Doctor: Plants “Worried” They’re Going Extinct Due to Global Warming are Releasing More Pollen

Back to School DuncecapBy Selwyn Duke

While driving home from an Easter gathering not long after midnight and trying to keep my eyes open, something on the radio made them wide. “The plants believe they’re going extinct because of climate change,” said the speaker, “so they’re releasing more pollen,” is how I remember it.

Had the Onion entered the terrestrial radio market? Had I gotten it wrong in my fatigued state? After a little investigation, I found the source of this WCBS NewsRadio 880 segment: An April 17 report entitled “Allergy Season Is Getting Worse As More Children, Adults Diagnosed.”

  • Tucker on “The Smartest People in the World”: Why Are They Wrong on Everything?!

Back to School DuncecapBy Selwyn Duke

Seemingly wrong about virtually everything, the “smart people turn out to be dumb! Why is that?” asked Fox News host Tucker Carlson Thursday evening. The answer, as the pundit admitted at the time, is deep enough so that it cannot be done justice in a five-minute television segment.

The commentator opened his show, Tucker Carlson Tonight, talking about the news of the week: How the release of the Mueller report has further reduced the Trump/Russia/collusion narrative to the stuff of tin-foil-hat haters. He went on to say that the Washington types’ embrace of that narrative is typical of them, “the smartest people in the world,” as Carlson mockingly put it. They’re “wrong about everything,” said he — “the border, Libya, the whole country in 2016” (referring to Trump’s election).

  • After Notre-Dame, Professor Charged With Attempting to Torch St. Patrick’s Cathedral

    954801_blogBy Selwyn Duke

In yet another episode of academics behaving badly, a college professor walked into New York City’s iconic St. Patrick’s Cathedral while carrying gasoline, lighter fluid, and lighters — in an apparent arson attempt — just two days after the shocking fire at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.

  • Time-traveling AOC Delivers “How I Saved the World” Message From the Future

Back to School DuncecapBy Selwyn Duke

Fresh from gazing into her crystal ball, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has delivered what she calls “A Message from the Future.” It’s presented in a slick video about how she saved the world via her Green New Deal, a work she narrates with the cocksureness of a 20-year-old boxer boasting about how he’s going to whoop a (in reality) superior opponent. Unfortunately, were her prescriptions ever followed, it’s our civilization that would suffer a knockout.

In the 7.5-minute propaganda film, put out by the Intercept and presented from a perspective of approximately 20-years hence, “the radical socialist, in partnership with comrades Naomi Klein, Avi Lewis, and Kate Aronoff, has gone bananas in appointing herself the global conservator of Planet Earth,” as American Thinker puts it.

Ocasio-Cortez 2039 related that the Democrats took both chambers of Congress and the presidency in 2020 and then gave us the “decade of the Green New Deal,” which sparked the “social and ecological transformation [necessary] to save the planet.”
